There are several Yamaha or Universal brake switches that could be made to work; what makes the proper part special is the bending of the wire hook so that it fits 'just so'. You do have to be careful about the connectors - your bike has two bullet terminals, while many others used a two-way connector. This switch on eBay should do nicely, with just a bit of persuading with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

I was thinking more along the lines that "apparently they have stopped making/selling FZR brake switches, will a Thundercat/YZFR1/<insert any newer bike here> switch fit?"

"Yes", and - as far as I can tell - "No". Besides, the Emgo part is less than half the going rate for an OEM piece.

Spring update - opening the '14 season:
  • Rear shock readjusted to 1 click softer (7 clicks out)
  • New tyres (Pirelli Angel GT 120/70ZR17 + 180/55ZR17)
  • Replaced rear brake switch
  • Received new intake rubbers (carb to airbox)
  • Received new valve cover gasket
  • Also, passed inspection
What still needs doing:
  • Measure valve clearances, adjust
  • Check the cam chain and tensioner
  • Sync the carbs
  • Rear brake master cylinder will need some serious cleanup or replacement
  • Broke the exup cover and bolts
  • There's not a single piece of plastic that doesn't need any repair
  • There is still one loose connector, no idea what it's supposed to connect to
  • Replace seat (or seat cover)
  • Check clip-on slack
Edit: edits in italic

'14 season 1st month update:
  • Synced the carbs
  • Installed new intake rubbers (carb to airbox)
  • Left vacuum hoses attached to the manifolds and plugged, to ease future sync (every 6000 km, according to manual)
  • Fastened the throttle handle/switchbox, that had started rotating around the clipon
  • Adjusted the headlights
Also, did ca. 200 km in the rain. Conclusions:
  • Tyres are good
  • I need fairings
  • Clover gear is excellent, everything underneath was dry when I got home
  • "Anti-fog" coated visors suck, I need to get a pinlock visor
  • I need to find the original rear mudguard (extension) from somewhere

'14 season 2nd month update:
  • Installed new bulbs in the headlights
  • One new bulb for the speedo
  • Cleaned and fixed the clutch switch
  • Got to the bottom of the clipon slack issue
  • Got the pinlock visor
New headlights (Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited H4 + H1) are awesome bright, although I wish they were a bit lower on the color temperature scale - they're a bit too white for rainy nights. The lower speedo bulb, a W2.3W, turns out to be a bulb not available from anywhere, only one of all those in the instrument cluster, finally found it from the Yamaha dealership, where it also wasn't a stocked item.

Clutch switch was a major win - now ALL the starting/ignition control items are in order! Also I win 5-10 seconds every time I mis-clutch at the traffic lights (less embarrasment time).

Also, got a record-low fuel consumption of 5.68 l/100km (41.4 mpg US/ 49.7 mpg UK). Nice.

Next in line:
  • Steering bearing inspection and re-lube
  • Brake pad and caliper inspection and cleaning
  • Valve clearance check
