winter project 2012-2013

Post by gsxridiot »

keeps me sane thru the long cold unridable winter months
well it was always 2strokes before this (RZ's, RD's and a Kawaka triple)
but i had to sell my track bike this year and figured i would need something for the track next summer
so here it is, a forgoten ex racer that has sat for nearly 15 years on its previous owners front porch waiting for somebody
its a '89 FZR400 with a '92 600 motor stuffed into it
some cool parts came with it though too: Brembo radial master, Brembo full folter rotors, Olins shock, a Marchesni front wheel and a PM rear
looks to have been repaired with a hammer
this ones gonna be alot of work

sanded off the old clearcoat on a '90 swing arm - what a PITA!
cleaned up most of the blemishes and re-clearcoated it

thanks alot,
procedure i used: about 8-10 sheets of 150 grit sandpaper- worked the bad spots out and used the factory paint as primer(just scuffed up existing finish) and painted with my favorite rattle-bomb
used same brand rattle-bomb clear on the swingarm too

Dude! That swingarm is gorgeous! Nice job! What grit did you use? The brushing turned out great.

On the other hand, that tank looks hideous. I'm sure it can be cleaned with A LOT of elbow grease. However, if you don't feel like going through the hassle, I've got a fairly nice one for sale if you're interested. $30 + shipping (including a cap and key).

They both really did come up well.....

the 400 subframe is so much more "smooth and flowing" than the 250.......i think ill need 50 sheets of paper and 10 tubs of elbow grease.....so many bits and pieces and hard to get at spots.
This is after a hit of paint stripper....did pretty much zero :ermm:

i know, Grey
that factory finish is tough, i tried multiple chem strippers with no sucess, even that "aircraft stripper"
i have had good luck just using the factory finish as a primer to sand on
that stuff is no doubt tougher than any product i can spray in my garage- so be it, i'll use it

one day i will own a proper blast /media cabinet, till then its stinkin sandpaper

Yea I think Id wish for a "parts cleaner" ! .....even a dishwasher to sneak a few things into... :whistle

But Ive cheated with my subframe today.....I went to the local powdercoater just to see how much to "sandblast" it ...... $AU40 ... and it was only an xtra $20 to coat it so I said call me when its ready!

thanks Brandon, again that was 150 grit sandpaper on the swingarm too
heh, that gastank is classic! didnt even smell like gas at all 100% varnish
i have another one that is in much better shape that i will be using
allthough it would be interesting to see what it would take to rehab this one, possibly a few pounds of nuts and bolts, a bbq rotisserie and a few days spinning would be a good start
then do the battery charger electrolisis
- glad i have a spare one

You can use phosphate etch from home depot or The Works toilet bowl cleaner. Both do a pretty good job with rust removal. Otherwise I have two powder coated tanks that are rust free.

Haven't forgotten about your PM either. Trying to get pictures to my comp is proving difficult after the last system update screwed some things up.

Nice job on the subframe, it looks amazing. What brand and colour did you use and did you prime it as well?
Thanks.
1988 FZR400U. I love this thing.
