Jerky low speeds *FIX = Cush Drive Bushings*
Hey all,
I new to this Forum / FZRs in general. So first off: Hi, I have a Black 98' FZR600 with about 16k miles.
OK, I have been riding this bike for a week. Great Bike, easy to handle, nice throttle and brakes; BUT every time i would get ON or OFF the Throttle -the bike would like Jerk, Buck, and/or Lurch; In General any changes in throttle (way more obvious at low speeds) were not smooth. Going low speeds in 1st or 2nd gear were impossible without constantly feathering the clutch... Really annoying and uncomfortable.
Here is the solution that made my bike 100% better:
First: i rev'ed the engine and noticed it was very smooth with no hesitations...
Second: with the bike Off, and Parked i grabbed the Rear Sprocket and noticed i could twist it back and forth pretty easily about a 1cm or 1/4in
Third: Ordered New Cush Drive Bushings (about $50)
Fourth: Installed the New Cush Drive Bushings
Fifth: Check and Tightened the chain a little (as a loose chain would also cause a similar issue)
Sixth: Drove the Bike and smiled because i could now drive at low speeds (under 20mph) in 1st and 2nd gear with no Bucking, Jerking, or Lurching! And without feathering the clutch constantly...
Long Story Short: If your bike is really Jerky at low speeds check your rear sprocket for movement; with the New Bushings it does not move at all by hand.

Re: Jerky low speeds *FIX = Cush Drive Bushings*
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that. I've had same issue for a month now and been at a loss trying to figure it out. I did notice when i put new sprockets and chain on that I had some play in the cush bushings.
Re: Jerky low speeds *FIX = Cush Drive Bushings*
Yea well the Chain was also pretty loose... But the Cush Drive was unbelievably worn; like the rear sprocket just fell out of the wheel.old_school wrote:Welcome and thanks for the tip.. I was thinking your chain was loose
and as an update i can now drive smoothly in 2nd gear at low speeds; so nice.
Thanks for the welcomes, i'll be tinkering a lot with this bike and so i'll likely be pretty active on this forum.

I'm assuming this is also a good start if you are having problems with your chain being tighter in some spots than others.

Sound more like you just need a new chain dude.kilika2 wrote:I'm assuming this is also a good start if you are having problems with your chain being tighter in some spots than others.

yup. if your chain is tighter in some spots it's stretched and is about time to replace... About to replace mine in the next week or two... Couple bad links is making the chain loose and tight, i can hear the chain clicking while pushing or driving the bike around...

Re: Jerky low speeds *FIX = Cush Drive Bushings*
Yeah the bad thing is this chain an sprocket set has less than 8000 miles on it. And I bought it after my tires. Still havent replaced them yet Haha. However I am running 14/49 so I have heard the large difference in sizes can make a chain wear fast.

Yea, i was thinking about doing the Quick Accel 520 Conversion; but as i just got the bike, i figure i'll save that upgrade til i am getting bored and want to make things exciting again.. haha!
What Brand/Type of Chain did you go with? I've heard cheaper brands tend to stretch and wear faster. Also do you lube it often? Just curious as i'd like to avoid replacing my chain often...

Re: Jerky low speeds *FIX = Cush Drive Bushings*
I got it from sum of all parts.com. I wouldn't go there though as I've been reading on eBay there are some very unhappy customers. I think the economy got to them. However DID chain and vortex sprockets. Yes I lube the chain about ever 500 miles or if I know it will sit for a bit. I highly recommend the 520 conversion. It's a lot of fun. Another problem I can think of that probably caused my uneven wear. When I first put the chain on I dove for about a thousand miles before I checks te tension by then it was pretty loose and I probably didn't help things with that.
