Fuel pump testing/rebuild
Hey all,
The bike was down for a time with a fried VR. I recently got every thing together, replaced the VR with one from and R1 and pulled and dipped/cleaned the carbs. I can't seem to get it to stay running, acts like it isn't getting fuel. I pulled the fuel line and although I hear a "Click" from a relay no gas gets pumped. Hmm sounds like a bad pump? I tried jumping 12V directly to the pump's wires. Nothing. I put a voltmeter on the wires from the relay to the pump and see ~12V for a few seconds when I turn the key on just like I'm supposed to.
What is the next step? Can I pull the pump apart and rebuild anything or do I just need to find a new one?
Anyone have a fuel pump laying around?
Thanks,
Mark in Colorado

Re: Fuel pump testing/rebuild
Hi Mark. Try giving it a gentle tap with something like the handle of a screw driver or ratchet. My bike sat for a while as well with all the gas drained from the pump. When assembled it would not pump, I just felt a dull thud from the pump when I turned the key. A couple taps and it started pumping again. I figured it was stuck due to any residual gas that may have dried internally.

Re: Fuel pump testing/rebuild
Thanks lewdog, tried that an no luck. It appears to be dead. I pulled it and put voltage across, checked the ground etc. I think I need to source a new pump. Anyone know of sources for inexpensive pumps? I would prefer new to used, but will probably need to end up going used.

some times you can flush the pump out with a good turkey baster or something els you can apply pressure and vacuum with

Fuel pump questions
Thanks racerd, but it appears to be an electrical rather than a mechanical issue.
Does anyone know if the pumps from the YZFs are the same/compatible replacements??? There is one available locally and it looks to be about the same, but I don't have any information about how much pressure they run etc.

That's what I was hoping to hear. Thanks for the info. Now if I can get them to a decent price I'll be good to go!

I couldn't agree more.yamaha_george wrote:MPC,

The overcharging VR more than likely took out the fuel pumps internal windings, rendering it beyond repair.
