running rough

running rough
just bought a 88 1000 and the guy says it will not idle without choke on and it will not rev past 8000 anybody have any suggestions where to start. it ran fine before i remember when he used to ride it and he said it all just started all of a sudden one day.he said he just came outside one day and was acting up any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would pull the carbs and give them a cleaning.

well i have concluded it is the carbs but no shops around here will even look at it they say its to old any help would be great. i can get them off i am familiar with carbs just not multiple carbs do i do anything different. if i take them off will i get them out of sync?

You can dismount and strip the carbs for cleaning without separating the bodies, but they're badly due for a re-synch anyway...

There are loads of stuff on the forum & WIKI on this subject even down to making your own Synch tool, read those thro first then if you are not sure on some point we are here.
1 tip do one carb clean at a time some times 2 & 3 are jetted slightly different to 1 & 4
