haro504 wrote:power shifting is how i described it you just shift it without the clutch. when you pull up on the shifter while accelerating it wont shift till you come off the throttle when the pressure is off the trans it shifts quite smothly i might ad then you hammer on and go through the next gear eliminating the possibility of the clutch draging so if it works its your clutch if it doesent its your trans. its just like using the clutch to shift but you dont. you would need it to start off though.
o ok, so just put it in first, then when going to 2nd, keep on the throttle and shift w/o the clutch, and if it DOES shift, the clutch is the problem. If it doesn't, it's the trans. RIGHT?

Thanks,D

basicly. it wont shift till you come off the throttle so pull up on the shifter while accelerating then let off the throttle and it will shift up then. do it for the gears it wont shift into 2nd 3rd 4th. this will eliminate the clutch disengagement factor so if it is the clutch draging it wont be a problem

hey i think it's something with the clutch then. I went on a long ride tonight and i tried the 2nd-3rd with no clutch and let go of the throttle a little and shifted and it went right into 3rd.......so this means.......it's the clutch right?

This bike sat for 3-5 years so this is only its 3rd run since it was brought back to life.

yea i think thats the case. Any chance over time of me riding it the plates will "unstick"

Also, in 5th and 6th at like 9k rpms at WOT the clutch slips.... I have to let go a little and then get back on it...

TFZR,
pity you did not say this earlier, I might have told you then to take the plates out and check the clutch outer for notches due to the oil in the bike over the years turning to varnish.

I took several long standing bikes and washed their clutches in thinners to get the old oil varnish off mind you these bikes were in a bit hotter weather than Florida in the south Caribbean Islands.

The fact that it slips @ high RPM is a plates issue DO NOT prolong the use like this you can blue & warp steel plates and literally burn corks that way all the heat softens springs. I would have that apart ASAP and clean the whole clutch area. (be sure to buy a fresh clutch gasket first)

TFZR,
That was a about 18 years ago and My pal tells me the paint has now changed due to "Elf & saftee" gnomes working overtime. It was probably cellulose.
Word of warning do NOT get thinners in the bearings & do not soak corks in it either.
I just roughed the corks with something like 300 grit just to remove glaze as I would brake pucks.

+1 on the Bra-Kleen, or any brake cleaner for that matter. Just make sure to wear gloves and that your workspace is well ventillated.

Please do.

Get that clutch apart. It's an easy job. You can do it on the sidestand and NOT lose much (ounces-if that) oil. Give the parts a good looking over....check the basket 'fingers' for excessive notchiness....notice while you take the plates out whether or not the steels are all in with sharps 'in' or sharps 'out' and if there are signs of excessive heat (bluing-scorched smell), and if the plates are flat (break out your old "table mirror" from the old days) .............
