The problem is that it rubs in some places and you really need an alternative rim to make it work properly.

I say go with the aircraft stripper and get some decent paint applied. The Heavy Duty / Contruction Rustoleum sticks well and once fully dry provides a tough shell.

Thats what I was thinking as well. Couple hundred bucks to powercoat or a $5 buck can of construction rustoleum. The later wins it for me.

having a hard time finding a good dealon a chain and a tire. I need to know how many links I need first.

Hi,
one thing the rustoleum will fill the sand cast wheel well and allow a smoother / better finish, take the advice once the swinger is down to bare metal do the spools makes the bike adream to sevice after that.
see :-

What you see there is the way I did it on a1WG alloy arm but the same parts work ('cept you use steel hex bits for a steel swing arm )

ALSO the first picture of the spool set up I did for my 3TJ swing arm :-

The chain I had for the conversion had 120 links in it. That was a RK/Vortex 520 kit from Sum of all Parts.

I will be running a 14 / 47 setup. Will 120 be long enough? I know most of you guys run a 15 / 45.

When I went with the 15/50 I did on my bike, I got a 120 link DID 520 VM chain and had around 6-8 links left over. 120 links should be plenty.

Forgot to add that - I ran a 15/49 and I also had several links left over from a 120 link chain.

Everywhere Ive been looking they want 80 plus bucks for a 0-ring gold chain. Ebay doesn't really have that good of deals unless u catch one at the last second.

Quick update.

I got a new BT020 tire for 60 shipped. I was able to get the bearings out of the swingarm by tapping them out with flat end piece of a 18 inch breaker bar. Couple of whacks and they came right out. I got a lead on a O-ring chain and the JT1307 14T sprocket on ebay for 70 shipped. Other than that I just need the rear sprocket for about 30 and the new bearings which will be about 40.

I should be able to keep it right at 400 for the whole project.

OK. I started this morning. Here is the swingarm stripped to bare metal. I will get it cut down this week and get it painted. So from what I read this is what I got to do.

-cut 0.375 off each end of the swingarm.
-make sure over all lenght is 8.47-8.50" with out dust caps and washers.
-final width to match fzr frame needs to be 8.75"
-bushing seat needs to be cut 0.075" deeper per side but if you do not have an end mill use a dremal and just taper it
