How to stop exhaust from rusting

Post by lloydspencer »

I And looking at getting a full vance and hines race system for my fzr600. The only problem is i have heard they rust very easily. Living in the uk and be an all weather rider means i will be riding in some harsh conditions. Any ideas to prevent rusting my lovely new exhaust system?

How to prevent exhaust rust?

Store the bike in a climate controlled low humidity environment. Never EVER ride it....hell, never EVER start it....

ahahhahaha I crack myself up!

Good high temp paint. Heat cure it. Couple coats....

I am thinking about sandblasting mine then doing some kind of controlled oxidation process. My boss does that with some of his metal sculptures

There are 2 different systems but the Headers are generally know to have the rusting problem. You need to get them powdercoated with a high temp powdercoat. Or chromed or something.

You can also have them ceramic coated. While pricey, you shouldn't have to worry about them ever again.

supposedly it accelerates it cuz its gets wet and is sitting on teh header pipes

reelrazor here saying:

yeah, that's the evidence I have seen with my own eyes. Especially if every single ride isn't enough to dry the wrap right out. But headers that have been in it for any length of time tend to just be flat rotten. Better to remove and sandblast every couple years and header kote them- in my opinion.

Don't know why it posted me as haunter..

Hi,
being near the sea aint gonna help too much with corrosion of any sort.

Ceramic coating does work (why the Military use it on Jeeps and such.

Header wrap will kill pipes in about 50% of the time unwrapped pipes will die.

They do rust from the inside out as well

should last about 10 years with care

Here endeth the lesson :-}

Seriously, I am thinking gunbluing, or some other controlled oxidation process the next time around. I'm gonna hit my boss up for info on that kind of stuff

RR,
try a stuff called KLotz GunKote. just take the pipes off take a propane torch and run the flame thro each pipe & spray with GunKote then run the torch thro again to bake it on. I have aset of 29 year old custom expansion chambers done like that on one of the RD's back home .

Loved the smell of the red Klotz 2 stroke oil <BG>

RR,
Yup you could but it is not as effective from experience in the windies at least it may be better in the colder climate.

This is the company I work for..the art page of the owner's check out "assorted flowers"..none of that is paint he heats and coats the metal then washes it off leaving a finish..colored or not...the green is a copper sulfate I think...the brown on the 'trunk' of the sunflower, I dunno...and the the yellows??

Most of his stuff sits outside...some of it for years and it seems pretty impervious.
