Custom Airtech Passenger Seat

Post by zero9243 »

Repost from the archives..

On wednesday I met up with thatkid and we took a 2007 R6 passenger seat and threw it on the FZR frame for use with the airtech tail. That same day we also got heel guards put on, got an R6 brake master cylinder mounted and bled, changed the oil (in 2 bikes), swapped out my speedo drive, Mounted my undertail that was not mounting correctly, new clutch lever and perch mounted, passenger pegs mounted, modified exhaust bracket, relocated shock resevoir, relocated the yzf VR, stripped the paint off some fram plugs and bled the brakes on thatkids bike.

The first and scariest cut
Image

Fiberglass protection. He got one and I didn't. What a friend :-D
Image

Early test fitting of the seat. God that day was full of test fitting
Image

thatkid's amazing fabrication
Lots of welding :-D

I gotta upload a few more pics of the finished product!

Oh, the VR got located between the undertail and the seat

Obviously my shot of nitrous oxide.....

Yah its my coolant res. Been meaning to get that thing powdercoated black. It kind of detracts from the rest of the bike...

Haha. Sure thing. You provide the tool while I'm there though. If you want to get a new exhaust hanger though shoot me a PM and we'll see if we can't get you something a little more original.

I like the red bottle, looks like anodized aluminum, and matches your red/black grips.

I love the pictures of thatkid welding / appearing to do all the work, (laugh) i mean that jokingly, but it's pretty awesome, reminds me of my late uncle, whips out his welding torch and just goes to town.
:notworthy: ClapHands

What kind of welding rig is that ? Does it only do steel ? If you mess up is it possible to have hot metal drip onto the sprocket and weld the sprocket to the chain? Is it cost prohibitive ? Do you need to take any classes to do it properly? (enough questions for now)
:duh: :tks:

(*wheels are turning* (first rule for me would be to have lots of fire extinguishers around and no gas tanks in the area !! har-har))

No appearing about it! I did ALL the work. In fact, I charged Zero double for getting in the way. :no Not really. When someone is welding on a bike there isn't much anyone else can do near you. He had the very important job of documenting the stages and that's tough when you can't look through the lens to line up the shot because of blinding issues from the welder.

The welder is a Lincoln Electric Wire feed MIG. It's the powerpak 175 or something. Cost about $400. A good auto darkening helmet will run about $70+ and welding gloves are about $20. Runs on 110v and can do up to 1/4" steel. I have the optional gas attachment for aluminum or fluxless welding but welding aluminum on 110v is a joke. You have to be damn good to do it and I am not when it comes to aluminum. Pretty easy to use with the fluxcored wire. No shielding gas needed, but a bit more spatter, so more clean up time. Would be pretty hard to weld two pieces together that you weren't trying to because of spatter. If you get worried about dripping just cover key pieces up with some tin and you'll be set. When you think about the initial cost, it seems a little steep, but then you realize how often you really can use a welder. Mine has paid for itself many times over already. It comes with an instructional video on VHS but I have yet to watch it. I just got some steel and started playing with it. Grabbed a welding book a little later and learned a little technique and I've been getting better ever since.

Just be careful. If you're anything like me you start to look at everything and say I could make that cheaper! That's when it gets expensive.

As for a fire extinguisher, I have one in the basement which is usually where my rig is. :D

I had to laugh about the fire extinguisher part considering the fire that got started in the basement the other week.

Also where is Yam93?
