F2/F3 rear wheel conversion for FZR

Post by gpracer15 »

I know the F2 rear wheel (17x4.5) conversion has been done numerous times. My question is once the cush is machined to work can I use it with the F3 wheel (17x5) instead. I hear the hubs are identical but you gain 1/2" in rim width. Will the chain clear?

theres a write up on it on the fzrarchives. i like the cbr wheels but they are a bitch to keep clean. i'd fo wider for a 180 swap to get current rubber, that swap was the one to do about 10 years ago.

I don't know if the F3 wheel will work, but I do know it won't be a problem with the chain. That is as long as you put a ZX6R 520 sprocket on the front.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

IMO, unless you plan on putting a 170 on the rim, the 4.5 rim of the F2 is a better option. 4.5" is the recommended rim width for 160 series tires. Yes, the F2 and F3 had 160's on the back.

There is a remote chance that the F3 rim is actually lighter. It's tough to say for sure. I had somebody on the Archives weigh both and here is what he said:

"F2 wheel, rotor, cush drive, 520 43T aluminum sprocket, BT50r tire: 33.2 pounds
F3 wheel, rotor, cush drive, 525 43T steel sprocket, BT56r tire: 33.8 pounds"

The F3 wheel should have been heavier with the steel sprocket (at least 1.5 lbs (I weighet my 530 steel 45T sprocket and a 520 45T aluminum and the difference was 1.66 lbs)) I'm not sure how to account for the different tires though.

Try it and post up a thread here. Maybe with the info we can put it on the WIKI.
