Fzr starting issue
So I recently took my carbs off, cleaned them, took the jet kit out and went back to all stock sizes in the jets and reassemble. I finally put it back together last night and changed the plugs. When I went to start it, it would sound like it was trying to turn over except it was realllllly slow and then I would hear a rapid clicking from the battery area. Any idea what may be wrong and how I can troubleshoot? Thanks
Re: Fzr starting issue
Sounds like a flat battery, the rapid clicking would be the starter solenoid, it does that when the battery is flat. Grab a multi meter and check the battery voltage it should be around 12.6V, also check the fluid levels in the cells. If the voltage is low charge it with a motorcycle charger with an output of less than 1 Amp, or jump start it using a car battery do NOT have the car engine running whilst jump starting tho.Acd92910 wrote:So I recently took my carbs off, cleaned them, took the jet kit out and went back to all stock sizes in the jets and reassemble. Re: Fzr starting issue
I checked the battery and it was fine but I heard that if the voltage dips during starting it can mean the battery is bad? Would it be anything with the carbs or probably not? I'll try jump starting it when I get home
Re: Fzr starting issue
By fuel levels in the cells you mean what?
Thanks !
Thanks !
Re: Fzr starting issue
FLUID levels NOT FUEL levels, I mean the electrolyte levels in the batteries 6 cells.Acd92910 wrote:By fuel levels in the cells you mean what?

With an assistant check the battery voltage whist cranking the engine (pressing the start button) the battery voltage should NOT drop below 10v DC.

Re: Fzr starting issue
So i jumped it an you could tell that the starter was working so I may need a new battery because it sounded like it used to sound when i started it. But it still would start, it would keep trying and i'd get a rumble here and there but nothing. like it might sound with a cold start.
Re: Fzr starting issue
"But it still would start," is that a typo, and should read "But it still wouldn't start,"?Acd92910 wrote:So i jumped it an you could tell that the starter was working so I may need a new battery because it sounded like it used to sound when i started it. If so you may have mixed up the starter and main jets, they look similar and have the same thread, a common mistake. Try spraying starter fluid or brake cleaner down the carbs then hit the start button.
Re: Fzr starting issue
Yes I meant woudlnt, sorry I'm using my phone. For the starter fluid I just spray it down the throats on top and then try to start it? Or do it when it's trying to turn over ?
Re: Fzr starting issue
Never ever spray starter fluid down the carbs whilst trying to start an engine! If you get a backfire out of the carbs you may get set on fire, unless you are wearing a flame proof suitAcd92910 wrote:Yes I meant woudlnt, sorry I'm using my phone. I assumed you didn't have the airbox on, I should of said spray starter fluid for a few seconds into the airbox intake, then hit the start button. Stay safe and GL
Re: Fzr starting issue
Thanks for the advice !
I had my brother pick up some starter fluid but when I got home he was asleep so I couldnt find it.. went outside and jumped my bike just to try again and it started up no problem (no choke needed anymore either!) without the starter fluid even.
I ran it for the past few days but then it started to lose charge and wouldn't start up unless i Jump it every time.
I got stranded on the road the other day so I got a jump and half a mile from my house the lights started going in and out (headlights, dash lights, blinkers), it randomly bogged down HARD at about 5000 rpm (which now I realize could have been losing cylinders running) and then randomly the enitre bike shut off. I know these bikes are famous for Voltage regulator problems (it's a 94 though) does anyone have a clue what this might be because of? Is it the stator or most likely the Voltage regulator, or could it just be the battery itself?
I jumped it AGAIN to get it home and it started up and ran okay to get home, if that helps
Thanks!

Glad you got it started, check this charging system flow chart out http://fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php?id=v ... flow_chart
