Handlebar bent?

Post by JohnBoy69 »

Hi my 1990 FZR600's handlebars look like they both come out at the same kind of angle but someone else just noticed this-

when turned to full left lock the left bar almost touches the tank and traps your thumb, but on full right lock there is a bit more clearance to the tank. The tank cover is sitting nice and central on the frame and yokes and forks all good.

Have I got a slightly wonky left bar? Is this normal? Any ideas?

Cheers,

John

Check your steering stops on the frame neck. Odds are someone dropped it on its left side and broke the steering stop off the neck of the frame thereby allowing more range of motion to the left. If you have hand clearance on the right side at full lock rihgt, you should notice the steering stop for that side doing what it was designed to do, limit the range of steering motion.

Thanks, I'll check that out later, but it makes perfect sense.

Hi,

It was actually the headstock plate having worn down on the right-hand side so much that it doesn't catch the lock early enough.

I'm guessing this is due to decades of the bike being put on the ignition steering lock?

Lugs on the bottom yoke are fine.

A sticky pad stuck on the plate should bring back the lockstop function back for now and I can try build it back up with some weld next time the front's stripped down.

Cheers,

John
