How to tell if its a 520 chain or not

Post by desmarat »

i am in need of a new rear sprocket and want to make sure i buy the right one. I looked up the numbers on my current worn sprocket and it says its for a 520 kit, just want to make sure its the right one. Anyone know of any way to tell what size a chain is?

Thanks

Some companies stamp the size of the chain on the links. I would start there.

No stamping there, is there a size difference? A simple way to measure the chain to determine?

Yes there is a size difference. A 520 chain conversion is normally customary with the YZF swingram swap for clearence issues and to shed unsprung weight. Since you have your chain off run it into a local bike shop and compare it with what they have on the shelf. Also what does the front sprocket say, look like.? The way the back sprocket is "shouldered" up because of the chain's wear you might have a chain alignment issue to correct. Or the PO may have just left the 530 cahin on and ran a 520 rear sproccket. That could also explain the rear sprocket wear. Either way get everything matched up either 530 or 520. Just trying to head off any issues for you down the road.

A 5** pitch chain is 5/8" between pin centers.
520 is 1/4" roller width.
525 is 5/16" roller width.
530 is 3/8" roller width.
532 is now obsolete and not recommended.

Awesome info guys, thanks. Any particular way to do chain alignment? Basically make sure both sprockets are lined up together? Anyone done a right up or pics on that?

Yeah, I was going to say earlier, old age getting me I forgot I didn't reply, that I would just recommend to just replace it all with whatever you want. If you get everything new you have 2 positives, first you know it's all correct fit and second how long it's been on there. There are a few ways you can go to get a little more acceleration out of your bike, or someone that wants more top end or better gas mileage could go for a set up that way. I believe thatkid has a couple of different set ups that would do either.

Also as far as alignment, I would get your set up on and then line of sight it. Or even a straight bar just to check it before you put the chain on there.

Chris.

Replace them all (chain and both sprockets).

Putting just a rear on guarantees you will be buying both the others fairly soon anyway-which the somewhat (now) worn rear will take out quickly.....

buy all three. buy 520.

Will do, my issue now is determining what kit to buy. When I look it up I see a lot of 5 bolt rear sprockes, and a few 6 bolt. Mine is a 6 bolt sprocket right now. Got to do some readearch to find out what dimensions I have. This would be a lot easier if I knew what year yzf swingarm I had.

Don't the wheel, swingarm, sprocket mount and sprocket have a part number on them?

Where would the part number on the swingarm be?
