Different rear shock

Post by Rob1969in »

Hello All, this is my first post ,so be gentle! Nice to meet you all.

I have an FZR 600 3HE on a K plate.

I have just come home from a mate's who has just fitted a used rear shock for me, the shock is an ebay buy and is in great condition, but the problem is that I am not too sure what bike it was off, either an FZR 750 or FZR 1000, he had to take 2.5 mm off each side of the top bush to make it fit and make the bottom connector(sorry can't think of the technical name!) a circular shape ,from the original square shape to fit in, and be bolted in, it has made the back end of my bike a little bit higher, not really noticeable from looking but the bike stands a bit higher on the side stand now, which isn't a problem, the only worry I have is, if I should be running this shock on my bike and if anyone knows if it will cause any problems with handling etc? I have complete faith in the guy who fitted it, as he is legendary in the field of bike mechanics and mods by the way, but didn't want to offend him by asking too many questions.

I rode carefully home as I have also had new front and rear pads fitted today and I must admit I am a bit unsure of the shock too, so didn't throw the bike in to the corners , the shock fitted has an adjuster on the bottom with 34 clicks , with an S(soft) and H(hard) which may help to tell you what the shock is off? I have it in the middle on 17 clicks for now but am aware it will need a bit of trial and error , but I just need to know if doing the mods are safe or if I have done a silly thing putting this shock on? The one I took off is complete scrap ,the damper has gone all together, also the shock linkage on the bike is very stiff ,maybe ceased, does anyone know the best way to free them or would I need to buy a new used set, there are plenty on ebay, sorry for all the questions but I'm a bit of a mechanical numpty to be honest.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

That's almost certainly an '06-08 R6 shock, and is a common mod. Don't be afraid of offending your mechanic friend by asking for details - he should be used to explaining what he did and why. I will say that I'm disappointed he didn't deal with the shock relay bearings; they're obviously dry as a bone. They might be ruined, or they might just need a good clean and lube. The ideal time to do that would have been while the back end was apart for the shock transplant ...

Thanks very much Don, he was a bit pushed for time and said he'd do them another time but perhaps it would be better to buy a good used set off ebay.

Many Thanks for your reply.

You won't know until you look. There were two reasons to why I decided to take apart my swingarm - it started squeaking and I saw this post http://www.exup1000.co.uk/phpBB2/viewto ... 821#132821.

Fortunately mine was not as bad, and seemed tight and smooth enough when cleaned and regreased. But I'll no doubt be looking for bearings in better shape when I can spot any. Unfortunately a full set of new bearings in the local shop is worth € 369.50 plus possible bushings.
1990 FZR 1000, 1993 engine, terrible state... but improving.
