Oil leaking, possibly crank case cover
Oil leaking after oil change. Some of the drops are def new oil and some are old or just black looking oil. Looks like its coming from behind thecrankcase cover Is there a gasket there? or is it just a cover for the sprocket?
Re: Oil leaking, possibly crank case cover
lots of oil round that area of the water pump and edges of the crankcase cover, I guess i will order a relacement gasket for both (where water pump conects to )
Re: Oil leaking, possibly crank case cover
Can you remove the waterpump without cracking it open? I just want to replace the oil o-ring under it.

Yeah, I've been around there alright.. Now, you can just take the water pump off without breaking the seal to change the O-ring. It's not hard really, just a pain in the ass to get at..
Take off the tank cover, and left side fairing.
Drain the coolant
Remove the front sprocket cover - Leave clutch cable intact and tie-wrap the cover to the frame to keep it out of your way.
Disconnect coolant line going from pump housing to the back of the engine between the carbs and fuel tank (you don't have to remove the tank at all like the manuals say. Shoud be 2 Allen (#5 I believe) screws holding the steel line in place. One at either end. Once you get the bolts off, pull hard cause there's an O-ring at either end. Inspect them (one of mine needs replacing)
Now you gotta disconnect the steel line which comes from the bottom of the rad and goes to the pump housing. Now I've got a 400 and the housings are different and this was the toughest part of the tear-down because you can't bend the steel line and it hits the engine downtube.. But it does come off..
After you have the tubes disconnected, there should be 3 (#5 again or #6) allen bolts holding the pump/housing to the block. Remove them and you should be able to pull the waterpump assembly out of the motor.
When installing, make sure you line the shaft notch up with the inside of the engine or you'll be pushing forever to get it back in place.. (You'll know what I'm talking about when you get the pump out..
Now, if my problem was only this easy...

Re: Oil leaking, possibly crank case cover
Remove the front sprocket cover: I think the manual calls this a crankcase cover, although its hard to tell because the #'s do not match the pictures. I was hoping(well not really) this had a seal and was another spot that was leaking because it seems easy to reach.
Thanks for the info, My manual is pretty vague, has some decent exploded views but not a ton of help with actual hands on stuff.

Re: Oil leaking, possibly crank case cover
As far as I know it's the Front sprocket cover.. could be crankcase cover, not sure what they call it to be quite honest.. You've gotta remove the clutch lever linkage, the shifter linkage, and pull that cover off.. You'll never get a socket in there to remove the bolts.. Like I said, it's not hard physically to do it, it's just a little time consuming because you're going to fight with a few things to get if out of there..
It took me about an hour or so to have the entire bike dismantled and the pump out of there last night..
