Re: Issues: Not starting ; was No Spark!!
I'm having a little issue here...
My 95 fzr600 wont start. The battery's good, fuel pump only turns on when running a wire from the battery... I can get the bike to crank if I spray cab cleaner into the carbs but it cuts right back off after about 10 seconds.
I'm wondering if it's a "coil pack" issue.... Any ideas?

Re: Issues: No Spark!!
If it fires off of the carb cleaner & runs for a few seconds, it sounds like you have spark. Of course you can always remove a sparkplug & install it into the plug lead, lay it on the head so it will make a good ground connection & crank the engine while looking at the plug for spark. It helps if you are in a darkened area. You should see a nice bluish spark jump across the sparkplug gap & often you can hear a small crack or snapping sound of the spark.
Was the bike running recently & then just quit? Or has it been stored for a while & now you are trying to get it running? If it has been stored for a while... Do you know if the carb float bowls were drained prior to storage? If not, then your carbs probably need to be cleaned. If you are real lucky, you might be able to drop the float bowls & spray carb cleaner up into the lower carb bodies while trying to squirt some up into the various jets & flush them out. Clean the float bowls of any crud & re-install. Then try it again. Remember that it might take several minutes, or starting attempts, to allow the bowls to fill with fuel before it will start. If this doesn't work, then you will have to clean the carbs properly by completely disassembling them & soaking in carb dip.
Buy yourself some type of fuel preservative & begin using it at every fill up. Yamaha makes a good fuel preservative. This will help prevent this problem from happening again. Whenever I'm done riding my Bike, I close the petcock on my way home & let the engine run until it runs out of fuel. That will empty the float bowls & help prevent them from gumming up.
Good luck

Re: Issues: No Spark!!
You're right... I guess I do have spark then. Lol
I'll try removing the spark plug and laying it on the lead this weekend.
The bike was running when a friend owned it. He sold it to a crazy nut who drove it slap outta gas and pushed it in his back yard where it sat for about 4mths... It's never crank without spraying into the carbs since and it's now been 1-1/2yrs..
I did take the carbs apart and got some of the gum out of the bowls and stuff, maybe I should do it again.
I've read about a pickup coil issue too. I'm baffled, but I'll try this and get back maybe tomorrow or so with the results.
Anything else you'd advise me to check while I'm at it?

Re: Issues: No Spark!!
Full cleaning of the carbs recommended - sounds like the floats are stuck closed.

" fuel pump only turns on when running a wire from the battery "
Seems like you already found your problem .. When you turn the bike on you don't hear the fuel pump buzz for a few seconds?

Nope,
It doesnt come on at all... I've even installed a new fuel pump- it still didnt come on when I turned the bike on.

Re: Issues: No Spark!!
Do you have a Voltmeter? Measure the volts from the wire which plugs into the fuel pump.
also maybe the Fuel Pump Relay: the fuel pump is controlled by the fuel pump relay.

Should be 12 volts i believe. But my real concern is if you're getting power to the pump at all.

Re: Issues: Not starting ; was No Spark!!
<ob pedantic> If you push the start button and it makes noise and the engine turns over, it is "cranking". If you push the button and it turns over but it doesn't go Vroom, it is not "starting". </pedantic>

If I remember correctly (b/c i have 2 I'm working on) it did attempt to crank when I hit the start button. But not once did the pump come on.

Re: Re: Issues: Not starting ; was No Spark!!
4 things that might have malfunctioned / died: the pump, the pump relay in the main relay assembly, the TCI, or the various wires between these various components. Carry out your checks ...
