Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
The footpegs & foot controls on my FZR400 are pretty beat upon & not in very good condition. They do not appear to be the original parts, but are by no means a quality after-market set. I've looked at a few web-sites of after-market rear sets & they can be expensive. I don't know if I need to invest that much money or not. I need a set that can be adjusted or modified to fit an RD400 engine in an FZR frame.
What all do I need to know & what do you guys recommend?
Are the original foot pegs & controls nice? Does anyone have a pair of take offs that they would like to sell? Please let me know.
Thank you
~JM~

I don't know the bolt spacing on the Genesis but they're old bikes and not hugely popular so you unlikely to find aftermarket rearsets. That said you might find somebody does them for race bikes but check you can still fit a rear brake light switch and that they have a return spring on the brake pedal.
The RD400 ? You mean the classic air cooled 2 stroke ? Well I guess you'll need to change the gearshift rod length which shouldn't be too difficult. The problem will be if the shaft is too high the rod could bind on the underside of the lever, but Yamaha's are fairly interchangeable so you might find a different lever to fit, or change the knuckle joint.
The fzr is a downdraught engine the old RDs are side draught the architecture of the frame is different and the weight of the engine is too .... You might get odd handling. Putting a different front and back end on the RD frame would be easier and you'll keep the overall look of the bike.

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
I have the FZR400 rolling chassis mocked up with the air cooled RD400 engine & it fits fairly well. The engine is narrower & lighter than the original engine, plus I'm able to eliminate the water cooled parts. Should make for a very lightweight & somewhat unique bike. The carburetor location on the RD400 engine is far different than the original & interferes with the fuel tank by about 2". I haven't decided if I will remove 2" off the bottom of the fuel tank or mount a more modern tank on top of the frame rails in the more traditional location. My first choice is to attempt to retain the original tank & modify the bottom for air cleaner clearance. I just don't know what type of fuel capacity that will leave me with.
I have seen pictures of an FZR400 with the water cooled RZ350 engine swapped into it & it looks like a clean swap. In theory if the RZ engine cases will work, the RD should fit also. The air cooled cylinders are bulkier with the cooling fins, but they still clear the frame rails & down tubes.
I have also seen pics of a bike like you describe where the RD frame had FZR suspension components matched to it. It was a good looking bike & I'm sure that it probably handled very well. Don't know how heavy it was though. My aluminum spar FZR frame is very light & looks cool also. This is my attempt at having classic 2-stroke power in a more modern rigid chassis with up to date suspension & brakes. For the purists out there... Please understand that my chassis donor was a well beat upon track bike that had seen better days. I would not do a swap with a cherry example of either an FZR400 or an RD400.

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
Hmmm, I think I'd go with a fabricated tank pushed forwards into the vacant airbox space, try and drop idown a little between the spars to get the weight more forward. You'll need some clearance to carry the HT leads loom and control cables (does the clutch go inside the frame like the later FZR's ?) the only hassle could be the throttle linkage, don't suppose you can move it to the left side ?
Back to rearsets, have a look at those adjustable type with a back plate full of holes. Get a man to make some new plates and your sorted ... well you'll need to play with the final position but you'll have more chance with these than bespoke.

What are you talking about when you say "HT leads loom"?
I don't expect much problem in running the electrical or the cables. I plan to use an RD400 wiring loom instead of modifying the FZR loom. The throttle is easy & the clutch is cable operated on the left side of the engine. The main problems will be sprocket alignment & kick starter clearance on the lower right frame. I plan on using 520 chain/sprockets, but I will most likely need an offset countershaft sprocket. It also appears that the original FZR engine had the countershaft sprocket located closer to the rear of the engine than the RD engine. I will try to use the largest diameter countershaft that I'm able to fit in the engine case to provide chain clearance at the swing-arm pivot, then adjust the rear sprocket diameter accordingly.
My kick starter may cause problems with the rear-set on the right side & require a folding foot peg to allow the starter to swing past it. I don't know how that will play out yet.
Thanks

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
I forgot they had a kick starter .... if you use an adjustable rearset they can sometimes supply folding pegs. I had a 400/4 a while back that had the right hand one that folded.
HT lead = High Tension from the coil to the sparkley plug. I was thinking on the lines of a petrol tank in the area of the fzr's airbox and the coils sitting in the standard position behind the headstock. When you've mocked up the engine in the frame put it on some scales (a pair of bathroom scales should be ok) then you can think about front / back bias and use the petrol to balance it a bit better before fine tuning with the suspesion heights .... probably

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
Does anyone else have any advise on Rear-Sets?
I'm getting real close to needing to buy a set. Are there any other OEM rear-sets from another type of Bike that will either fit or by easy to adapt?
How about the after-market?
One feature that I do need, is a folding foot peg on the right side for kick starter clearance.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I have seen a few re-powered projects where the kickstart lever itself has been modded by extending the cranked throw to clear the fixed footrest.
Some have been moved on the splines so the stop halts the the travel not the footpeg.
There is an aircooled rd forum with loads of info on this (TZ replica's sort of. !)
If you can go with this then jack up plates and the original foorpegs can be modded to any position.
Yamaha George is expert on this and also RD 400 mods.

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
I have thought about heating the Kicker & bending it if needed. That seems to be standard fare on RD's that have rear-sets.
I found this rear-set company: http://www.motobits.com
They make some nice rear-sets, plus they have a pair for the FZR400/600. They do not fold, but they do have the same size & thread pattern as many OEM folding pegs. So far this is the best option that I've found.
Thank you

A Swedish company called Raask still list rearsets for the 87-88 FZR600. Not sure if they are a direct swap 3HE to 1WG???
http://www.raask.se/e-fotpin.htm
These are currently available on ebay UK, maybe someone could ship them for you??

Re: Please School Me On A Pair Of Rear Sets...
According to the latest parts fiches, the 400 footpeg brackets are 3HE-27442-00 (left) and 3HE-27443-00 (right); formerly 46X-27422 & 27443. The same parts are used for the 600, so - the rearsets are interchangeable.
For the 250 pilots in the audience, the 3LN uses the same brackets. I'm not sure about the 2KRs ...
