Might be a Bitza????

Post by fzrnoob »

hi all,

so im not sure whats going on here, was doing an oil change on my bike yesterday (Yamaha FZR 250) and checked out the vin tags etc,

i was told by the previous owner that the bike was an 88 model, yet when i checked the vin tag (see below) it says it was manufactured in 89???

Image

yet the model and series number stamped into the frame on the other side suggest it is an 88 model

model 3HX1

series 2KR

http://my-x15.net/FZR_INFO.html

that link has all the info on the models,

and another weird part, the EXUP exhaust system was supposedly introduced with the 88 model, yet mine doesn't seem to have it (refer pic below)

Image

thinking i might need to give the bike a complete overhall to return it back to original spec.... whatever that may be lol

if anyone has any insight into what may be going on with it, please let me know.

cheers
mitch

Well that is not an original Yamaha VIN/chassis plate, it just shows a number issued to the bike by the registration authorities (??).

I would imagine the authorities took the year of manufacture information from the importers - who got it a year or two out. If you always use the frame number on the headstock to order parts you won't go wrong.

The last year for 2KR's was 1988 but is entirely possible that some ones weren't registered as new in Japan until sometime in 1989 - even 1990. The importers would only use info from the registration documents in Japan. I doubt they would chase up Yamaha with the frame number to determine date of manufacture. The last 2KR's did get exup I think :headscratch:

The first of the beam frame bikes, the 3LN1, started in 1989. The 3LN1's have engines with cartridge oil filters that bolt up into the bottom of the sump.

the 3LN3's have a spin on oil filter below and behind the gearshift on the lower left side of the engine, and are 1990 - 1991 ish.......

My 1990 FZR400RR 3TJ has been stuck on a 1994 plate by the UK authorities as that's the year it was imported... :grinnod:

cheers mate, great info.

will check the numbers on the head stock when i get a chance

@ Grey Import, i thought you'd be better off having the exup due to increased low rev performance, mine seems to hesitate a bit around the 12 grand mark, thought maybe its cause i have no exup, but most likely dirty carbies or the floats have been set incorrectly....will get it sussed out soon enough

A 250 that wasn't designed for EXUP will get by without it. A 250 that WAS designed for EXUP will fall flat on its face if it isn't working, but properly maintained will have noticeably better performance than the non-EXUP older sibling.
