oil strainer housing
I need to know if there is a gasket that goes between the strainer and where it bolts to the engine. Bike came to me in a box and the parts were already removed it does not appear the there was anything stuck in between but then again it may not have left any residue as it was bathed in oil for 28,000 kilometers. does anyone know if it had a gasket, my haynes book doesn't mention it and nor does any yamaha parts sites.

Re: oil strainer housing
my 1989 strainer looks like this:-
there are o-rings where the pipes enter the engine, but no gaskets. the actual strainer is clipped onto the main metal housing, and can be removed. you cannot remove the metal mesh as its spot welded on, but you can give it a damn good clean - mine has done 46,000 miles...

sorry, looks like I read strainer but brain saw filter
Re: oil strainer housing
So at the bottom of your photo there are 2 bolt hole and I am wondering about that mating surface where it bolts to the block you have no gasket in between? on another note where does one find a chain link crimper for the cam chain and where to find tapered feeler gauges for cam to shim bucket clearance checking?

Re: oil strainer housing
i've seen cranked feelers on ebay before but not sure of any manufacturers name
check the parts diagram for a gasket but cant see why there'd be one there ....afterall it'll be a close mated surface and any minimal amount of oil will simply escape back into the sump where it was originally

Why are you breaking the cam chain? It's generally not necessary on the fzr engine.Rooster wrote:So at the bottom of your photo there are 2 bolt hole and I am wondering about that mating surface where it bolts to the block you have no gasket in between? on another note where does one find a chain link crimper for the cam chain and where to find tapered feeler gauges for cam to shim bucket clearance checking?
On others I have HAD TO break the chain on and therefore have had to re-rivet I have used a basic nut-splitter in two orientations on the end of each pin. That's a #12 tool at any decent auto parts store.
"Tapered" feeler gauges? "go/no-go" gauges are a common item at the same places...worst case tool truck item (Snap-on, Mac, Cornwell)

Re: oil strainer housing
Previous owner blew the clutch after some high revving gear slipping issue and the resultant fragmentation took out the sleeve in #4 and also took a chunk off of the #4 piston. There are peices missing off of the flywheel part of the clutch and the last guy to work on it left the damaged gears and shift fork with the parts in boxes. This is one of those never do projects where all comes in pieces and I have to assemble the jigsaw puzzle.
Thanks for the oil strainer info and where I live there are no decent autoparts stores.

Okay, any online auto parts retailers you could source?
I would think that Oilberta would have a lot of mechanical supply outfits to deal with the oil boom??
