FZR400 Sub-Frame Modifications & Replacement?

Post by ~JM~ »

What type of modifications or replacement seat Sub-Frame assembly is available for the FZR400? Mine has had the tail end of it hacked off. It looks like the shock mount really limits the options.

Thank you

Options I have seen are find a straight stock one, or build a custom one.

I would start by looking through the hybrids section. Lots of info their, I think there might even be a fzr-400.:-)

It's not that bad. Working with carbon fiber is very much like working with fiberglass. The core of the tail is made of 1" thick pieces of insulating foam shaped and then the carbon fiber was laid over it. And the upper shock mount can be made pretty simple as well. The pieces could be cut out in a home shop with a drill press and a bandsaw, then taken to a local welder. Mine was more complicated than it need to be because I wanted ride height adjustability and I didn't want to do a complete redesign when I ran into some problems.

Don't you need to vacuum bag the carbon fiber to prevent it from floating up to the surface of the resin?

I'm mostly interested in using aluminum. I like working with stainless & aluminum for its industrial look & easy finish with a brushed or bead blast finish. I was hoping to see a few differing designs to spark my imagination.

Thanks

Vacuum bagging helps get the excess resin out of the part making it lighter and stronger because the layers of CF are closer together. I could have done vac-bagging on this but I wanted to keep it simple. It's still only 5.5lbs. Probably could have been three... maybe next time.

SS and aluminum are fun to work with. Here's the subframe I made out of AL for my SV:

I was thinking something along the lines of this one, as these are the only pics that I've run across on building a subframe.

Of course this Subframe did not have to incorporate a shock mount.

Holy Golden Gate Bridge Batman! That thing is overbuilt! With the right design you could make it out of 1/8" or even 1/1 6" aluminum.
