anyone able to tell me what the story with this pipe is it seems to have been cut only noticed it when i had the bike stripped.

That is probably the engine cranase breather pipe and connects to the air box. ithink it goes to the back left corner as if you were sitting on the bike.

Sounds about right why would the previous owner have cut it and left it like that?

That is indeed the crankcase breather and it should look like this on a 3LN

With that pipe...as u can see on the engine side below the circlip, it has split.....it is has also gone "hard" in places obviously from age and engine heat....I would say yours has probably snapped off.

I researched replacing mine but it seems model/engine specific .... and not available new.
I even have another one from my spare motor but its in poor shape also.

I would try to replace wat u have with some sort of pipe and channel it "downwards" so as to avoid any junk getting in the hole.

Heres what the end of the original pipe looks like pulled apart......the flattened end is not sealed
