1992 fzr 600 with no title!

So I got a 1992 fzr 600, it was only missing the swing arm and radiator, but I got it for $300 bucks. The guy said he was gonna be getting the title sent to him, buti haven't been able to get ahold of him. I know it isn't stolen, but thats about all. What can I do if I can't get ahold of him? I have it completely apart ATM. Does anyone have a 1992 fzr 600 frame with a clean title perhaps? Or any ideas on what I should do?

Contact you local Police department? In some states it's illegal to transfer, or accept the transfer of, a vehicle with no title.

Did you get a Bill of Sale at least?

Yea, I have a bill of sale. Someone said I can find a frame with a clean title and just use it on this bike. Does that sound legit?

From what I know, even Bills of Sale need to have a VIN number on them. You really can't use the title from one bike for another bike. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of a title in the first place. You're best bet is to keep trying to contact the PO. Give the DMV a call and see what they recommend. I was actually able to speak to someone from the CA DMV on a couple different occasions and they were quite helpful (believe it or not). Worst case scenario, you ditch that frame and buy another one (that has a title) for a couple hundred bucks.

Just to add, you can build your current bike around a completely different frame. The DMV only cares about the frame VIN. I believe California is the only state that actually requires that the motor number also match (either that or they're the only ones who are real sticklers over it).

Brandon is right on the motor VIN being (partially) irrelivant. If he does not produce a title for that frame, you NEED to check with local law enforcement to ensure it is not stolen. Then, as Brandon just suggested, buy a different FZR frame or parts bike with a title, and toss your working motor into that frame. You can probably resell that 400 frame to a racer quite easily. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't belive you need a title or a VIN for a race bike.

There was no mention of an FZR400 frame. If there was, I'd be inclined to agree that it could be sold fairly easily.

However, it's a pretty common misconception that track bikes do not need paperwork. From what I've heard / read, if you get pulled over on the way to the track, the cop can ask for paperwork for the bike. If you don't have any, it could get impounded. Not sure about other states, but here in California, technically, you have to have paperwork to even TOW the bike. The CA DMV has a provision for "Off Road Use". In the language for the provision, there is even mention regarding vehicles used in a track environment. This is the correct way to go about it. In some instances, in the case of bikes that were never sold for street use (TZs, RSs, etc.), this is the ONLY way to do it legally.

I think he's saying sell my current frame- when he mentioned the 400 frame, but mine is a 600, just for the record. And yeah, I was thinking about buying a frame with a title and just putting everything onto it, if you look in my previous posts, the who,e thing is disassembled anyways. Perfect time to just switch the frames!

Your in the states man!, just file a mechanics lean on it with the dmv, and walaa.. in roughly 30 days a new title will be sent to you! no need for the bill of sale.I had a customers bike for repairs and never could have the bill paid off, and forfeited the bike to me, but could not locate the title himself.the 94 fizzer listed below is it. Compeled me to buy the 89 after riding it.


I buy all kinds of bikes with no titles and follow this process,

1. Call police to do vin check for stolen property-they fill out a form proving this.
2. file a mechanics lean with the dmv, takes a while as they will run the numbers to verify not stolen as well, then they will send
a notice to the current name and address on the title informing them of the lean claim, and if no response will follow steps to issue you a new title.
3.If all goes as well as expected your done, and have a issued title in hand within 30-45 days depending on your states response time...
