Just bought an FZR and have a few questions

Post by kerbyjonsonjr »

I just bought a 1995 FZR 600 and I have a couple of questions about it. I noticed that it was leaking oil so I drained what little oil was left and then wiped it all off and filled it again to find out where it was leaking. I believe the leak is just from the gasket on the bottom of the engine. When I started it and took it for a very short 2 minute ride it started producing white smoke like crazy. It was a pretty thick cloud following my bike. Could that be from over filling it with oil? I only put in 2 quarts. Or is it more likely that it is the head gasket?
I was also wondering if anybody knows the best place to get the actual service manual and the owners manual? I have found it online but was wondering if there is a place to get the hard copy version.
Also, what websites are best for getting parts for this bike? I would really appreciate any help at all. I had so much fun riding the bike the very little time I was on it and really hope I can get it fixed. Thanks!

Sounds like you might be in for a tear down.

White smoke generally means that you're burning coolant - in that case, you can hope that it is only a head gasket replacement.

Check eBay for a Genuine Yamaha Service Manual.

I really like RonAyers.com. Their prices are some of the best and they don't gouge you on shipping costs.

Or depending on what you need I may have it lying around my shop or can order it for you.

I have now stupidly realized that I just may have added too much oil. I just discovered that the drain plug is actually on the kick stand side of the bike. I removed the hex bolt on the other side of the bike and some oil came out so I figured that was it. Do you have any idea what that hex bolt is for? I am going to drain the oil with the actual drain plug, fill it up with oil, run it for a bike and see if the smoke clears up. Also, how much high should the anti freeze be? I cannot see a min max level on the reservoir.

Thanks thatkid if I need any parts I will definitely let you know. I know I'll definitely need a few little things like some screws that go on the side cowlings and things like that but I'll let you know if any thing else comes up. Thanks!

Did you also post about this on the Archives or are you just the second person this week to have tried to drain the oil from the brake side of the bike???!!
1994 FZR600R Molested and rigged by the PO... BUT, I got her cheap, and she runs pretty good so I can't really complain!

Assuming you have the stock reservoir, there ARE actually min / max lines on it. They are on the inside so you need to look up her skirt... so to speak... :whistle

After actually draining all the oil and putting in the correct amount of new oil she is running great. No more smoke and no more oil leak. I took it on a 40 mile ride today and it was great! I love this bike.

Is there any chance that you have an air filter lying around? Or possibly order one? I found one online for $15 but then shipping was another $15 so I am hoping for something a little cheaper than that.
