Re: Mint '89 1000 on Craigslist LA
very nice but unless it has some race history or finds a well off fzr collector (because they're SO common) I'm thinking a 4500 asking price isn't going to happen. His comparison to a 13k new bike says a lot when his 4500 asking price would buy you something that would do work on that classic

A race history would probably devalue it since it would more than likely be in nowhere near as good of shape. This is NOT a "common" run-of-the-mill ~$2500'ish example of an FZR1000. Regardless of what a new bike - at that price - would do to it, the buyer would obviously be someone who is looking for something other than "the same old, same old". It all depends on what a potential new owner is looking for. Is he looking for the latest and greatest (which has capabilities that he will probably never be able to exploit ) or is he looking for a bike that will hold it's own ON THE STREET (with ANY newer bike) and, at the same time, be comfortable on the morning commute to work (with capabilities that he will STILL probably never exploit)? My guess is that this bike will (hopefully) go to someone who is not controlled by his ego and really knows what this machine means to the history of modern sportbikes.
It's still damn yummy to me!
I need a bigger garage...

That '89 is exactly the bike I was looking for a few months ago. To me, being 43, the '89 FZR 1000 is the iconic sport bike of that time. I couldn't find one in decent shape so I settled on my '91. There are plenty of guys out there looking for that bike. IMO $4500 is a no brainier.

I apologize if my post came off the wrong way. It may have been the beer..._Will_ wrote:so we agree, he needs find the previously mentioned well off collector. You better start working on that garage
While I agree that it would more than likely go to someone who is looking for THAT bike (or something similar - older CBR1000, ZX10, ZX11, etc.), I don't think that person necessarily needs to be well-off or a collector. On the other hand, I also agree that, generally speaking, a seller will have a tougher time (especially in this economy) selling at a price that would fetch a bike that's 10 years newer. BUT, I don't think the price is crazy and I think the market for that bike - at that price - is bigger than some might think. That said, I think we are, more or less, saying the same thing.
Oh, I've got a futon in the garage that will, hopefully, be making it's way back into the house (maybe today?). That's room for one more bike!
. I'm 41 myself so that's the era that I started riding in ('89 600 was my first bike). So... you might say that we have a bit of a bias towards bikes from that time (especially ones that are in as great of condition as the one in the ad).Brown Stain wrote:That '89 is exactly the bike I was looking for a few months ago.
