where are you guys finding 520 sprockets?

Post by FZRRDRZ »

Can someone direct me to a resource for 520 sprockets in the states?.. I can't find anything in the 43-48t range for the 400's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated/ I've searched for a retailer and can't find a damn thing.
Thanks,
John

I checked JT-- on there website they offer no 400 rears except a stock 55 (and only at stock, 428 pitch) and Supersprox seems like they'll do a 520 that fits (at 36 to 53t) but only by special order request... maybe that's the only way to go. I'll give 'em both a call tomorrow. Thanks.

Try doing the search as FZR 600. The sprocket bolt patterns should be the same if I remember correct. Of course chain length will be shorter on the 400.

I agree taggy—your aftermarket industry for the smaller club racing type bikes (RZs, RGVs, TZRs/ the stuff I like!) is so much better then ours… It also took me forever and a day just to find a papered FZR400 over here at a reasonable price. Harleys? Can’t walk five feet without trippin’ over one.

sweekster- I've got a 600 sprocket carrier in the garage. I assumed they were different but I'll go check it out. Thanks.

Why switch a 400 UP to a 520 setup?

Less weight, less power loss thru the stock 428......................

I was thinking about the conversion because I may do a 600 engine swap soon and at that point would want a somewhat stronger chain. I also think the weight difference between the stock chain and the 520 seems negligible.

The weight in fact is not negligible. There is a weight difference, but more importantly the kind of weight it represents. The chain and sprockets are rotational mass, which should be kept to a minimum wherever possible. I de-converted my 400 back to a stock chain and there is a difference in throttle response. Not huge, but there. I have flogged mine to death, both at the track and at Deal's Gap one or twice a week on average. No problems.
Cam chains, that's another story.

I understand rotating components develop reluctance (and that a weight difference here does not translate as a one to one increase), I just meant “negligible” to me and what I’m after right now.

I got my front and rear 520 sprockets for my FZR400 from Speedwerks in Dover, DE. The front is the same as an FZR600 sprocket. The rears are PBI sprockets and I think the Part Number from PBI is 7150-XX (where XX is the number of teeth). It's a "universal" sprocket but the bolt pattern fits the FZR400 rear sprocket carrier.

AFAM makes them too. I think you can get the part number off this pic. These are for sale too. :grinnod:

By the way as far as weight is concerned, from a 530 (Stock FZR600) to a 520 chain I shaved .84 lbs.

The big difference was going from a steel rear to an aluminum rear, which shaved 1.66 lbs.

I don't know what the increase would be going from 428 to 520.

I just want to say this is not true. They offer numerous 428 rears.

JT offer a 520 Conversion for the 3TJ/4DX FZR400 which has the same rear fittings as the previous poster mentioned.

They are the same sizes as mentioned in the yamaha race kit manual.
