Post by frankywashere »

Can I swap my 1989 water pump for any year?

I'm going to say, "Probably." The cases are basically unchanged, and the various o-rings, hoses and bolts are all the same between the '89 and '99.

From looking at the parts fiche for your 89 and comparing it to a 91 (the year the cover part of the pump changed) it would seem they are almost interchangeble. Meaning you should be able to use the in the actual pump from a 91+ fzr and retain the cover from the 89-90 and it'll still be functional. The oring that goes between the two has the same part number throughout all years of the US spec model.

Hope that helps

well i ordered new seals and installed them today andL i'm STILL getting a leak from what seams to be the water pump. i did not end up installing a new pump just new seals.

it only leaks small drops when i turn the bike OFF after a ride. i don't understand what it could be, i installed new seals. it LOOKS like it only leaks from the bottom screw of the water pump.

i wonder if overtightend the screw and squished the seal?

could i have blown the seal already? the first time i installed the seal the bike almost over heated because i didn't have enough coolant and i shut it off just before the red. i wonder if that could have blown the seal already.

If you replace a seal on a damaged shaft or housing, it very well might weep immediately, with complete failure in short order.

is it leaking from the cover or from where the pump meets the bike?

It SEEMS like its leaking from where the two halves of the pump meet.

I didn't notice any visible damage on the housing. Could it be some very small damage I can't see?

I had this leak I was chasing foreverrrrrrr and i ended up having to yank the water pump housing out of the engine and replace it with an entire new housing. It sounds like you have replaced the seal for the cover (which I did like, 6 times as well using various amounts of gasket sealer). Can't be sure but that's what it seems like. Now the problem is that the housing itself I dont think is compatible year to year, at least, I know for a fact the 89 housing is different because it accepts a metal coolant tube vs the rubber one.

yes sounds like the same problem.

i did replace the rubber seal and yeah it's still leaking. the problem i i don't see any problem with the housing. did you see any problem with yours?

also did you just buy a brand new one? or an old one?

The one I ended up using was a used piece. I really didn't see anything noticable wrong with mine, which was why it was pissing me off so much when i was trying to fix it!
