Some tips for my new project

Hey guys, brand new to these forums. Bought a 1997 FZR 600 the other day and was pleased to see that there was a forum dedicated solely to these bikes. Just had a couple of questions regarding parts for my bike. I'll post some pictures below of it as well. As you can see, I have it stripped down a bit and am ready to do some work on it. The story behind the bike is that it was laid down at around 30 mph on a cloverleaf and the accident cracked the starter cover, side cowlings, headlight assembly, and tweaked the forks. Picked the bike up for $550 which came with the complete bike, additional Yoshi pipe, whole set of TL1000 plastics and parts, and a TL1000 engine. Bike is clean titled, electronics all work, has a little under 13k on it, and everything but the things mentioned are good (to my knowledge). Really, I can live without the cowlings since i'm 15 and I really dig the "streetfighter" look, but the other damages must be addressed. So my question being, could I use parts from an 89 FZR 1000? If so which ones? Or is there a better place I can get them without paying ridiculous amounts (i.e. $90 starter cover on ebay)? Maybe use parts from a different bike? so to clarify, you want to make a streetfighter out of an FZR600 and a TL1000?

body work aside, mechanics wise i believe that not a great deal from an FZR1000 will fit a 600 if anything.

sounds like quite a project, but one that can quite easily cost far more than just buying a good fzr600 or tl1000 in the first place.

Not really sure which parts you were planning on using from the TL1000, but you are probably best off finding the basic things you need from another FZR600. Less hassle, and it will get you "on the road" quicker (I quote, because I assume you can't yet ride at 15).

The parts of this bike were pretty consistent between the years they were made. Check out motogrid.com to cross reference with parts that are usable from other years.

If you are going streetfighter, you have the benefit of not needing to put too much back on, but only get the forks back to spec, and then modify to taste.

Some of those side covers are very pricey, because it seems many people dropped them just like your PO. If you are patient, you will find some decent prices on here, as well as Craigslist and eBay.

In general, patience will be your best (and most frugal) friend.

Thanks for the tips guys I think I was unclear about those TL parts though. I have no intention of using any of those it would be wayyyy too much modding for what i'd get out of it. Just went out to the scrapyard and replaced my forks so I figure i've got a good start. Thanks again

Took another adventure and meandered back to the scrapyard. Got an new headlight bracket and new headlights. Just looking for my starter cover and front fairing now. Also fully took apart and cleaned my carbs. Boy those Mikunis are easier than my Kawies Tk mechanicals. anyway, whenI look at the wiring connector for the headlights, there's only one plastic connector. Both high and low beams work, but I'm wondering if I'm missing some of my harness or some connectors. If so how can I fix it? Thanks

There is a color wiring diagram on here somewhere. And make sure you grab the manual too. IIRC, there are a couple connectors up front - definitely 2 that deal with the blinkers and all the idiot lights on the dash etc.

On your main harness you have the one plug. Then there's another harness that ties both lights together and then plugs into the main harness.

So could I just splice three more wires and another headlight connector from the existing headlight connector to fix this? Or should I look for the piece of the harness i'm missing? Thanks again guys

You're missing your headlight sub-harness. There's a couple guys on this site doing full part-outs; sub-harnesses rarely move, so hit them up - you might get a deal!
