having HORRIBLE idle and running problems. plz advise

Post by hdp0556 »

1990 fzr 1000 exup. bike was recently bought, noticed a small leak out of fuel pump housing so i talked to the guy down more than originally priced...
anyway, bike rode well, battery needed a solid charge, but after sealing the housing, bike will not run consitantly, aligned the exup cables and valve, greased it and reassembled, servo motor and cable assembly.

seems like it is not getting fuel, or maybe some but more at other time ,
when i first turn ignition key on , there is a knocking sound, im thinking fuel pump is out, as it is so old.
AND THE BIGGEST ISSUE IS , what is a good recommendation for the idle screw adjustment ????

i know this bike will run well, and just needs the proper adjustment , and a new pump. just wondering if this Noob will get a little help from some pros on this bike, its my first yamaha. not sure the proper specs . so used to gravity fed .
thanx

the clicking noise you hear when you turn on the ignition is the fuel pump priming and is perfectly normal. The rough running could be a few things without more info...air leak, worn emusion toobs, carbs out of balance, misture screws set incorrectly....

download the Yam workshop manual and set things up to spec to start with

If its not broken it dont need fixing

Hi,
Stig is right get the book and work from that.
One thing to mention is that FZR's are warm blooded they hate cold starting. i live in the tropics but I still have to use "choke" for a good ten minutes before she will stop stuttering on pull off.

Nik,

They aren't THAT cold-blooded. It sounds like your valves are tight, or you're jetted too lean.

if its KNOCKING its probably bad but a ticking sound from the fuel pump is normal . and what do you mean by sealing it? (gas and rvt don't work well together!!)
also was the bike sitting for a while could just need the carbs cleaned or a fuel filter change !!

thanks. it was the vac tubes underneath the carbs. they had flimsy weak tubing , that i replaced with better vacuum hose and some clamps to secure them. fuel pump seems to be working ok, and the idle is better than ever. running wheelies from 1st to 2nd with an easy speed shift. im a suzuki rider born and raised,
yamaha is so new to me, but im starting to like it.

what is a good recommendation for a strong battery at affordable price for this model fzr 1000 exup??
and if i need to replace the rectifier/ regulator what is a suitable replacement and where would i get one?
thanks for your guys advice, it was helpful.
and your totally right about it seemingly stuttering when not warmed up for at least ten minutes.

anyway,
keep the love of the ride. peace
