Copper and aluminum.

Post by kilika2 »

So I'm curious if it would be ok for me to coat my head gasket in the copper spray. I am having a hard time keepin it from leaking. It leaks out front of the block where there wouldn't be pressure anyway. I'm not 100 % sure on my ft/lb of torque last time but I will be this time. I havent gotten her open yet to see where it was leaking but, I'm liking the double checks when I go back together. I don't Remember the exact name. Versya? I hear tell they are pretty good.

Thanks.
Chris.

Copper spray is for copper ring gaskets. The sheet-metal head gaskets already have some sort of goop on them.

Vesrah makes good kits, but the best head gasket is an OEM head gasket.

Might be worth having the head and cylinder decks skimmed to true them up too.

OEM gasket-no sealant.

And along the lines of what Kurlon said..get the head sanded at your local automotive machine shop. This is a bunch less metal removal than shaving the head (flycutting) and will help to remove any slight imperfections.

That said, WHAT is leaking? Coolant? To the outside? Or to a combustion chamber?

Coolant and oil. It leaks where the jugs meet the block. Actually right where you line up the stator to know the bike is at TDC. It only leaks while it's warming. Once I take off the leaks slows drastically. And now that I think about it my head gasket didn't have any goop on it. It was just a piece of metal. The other gasket did. The one that goes on top of the jugs but below the spark plugs and valves.

That's NOT the head gasket. It is the 'base' gasket. It should only be a piece of treated gasket paper. OEM-is embedded with sealant. I think there are a couple of o-rings there (around studs).
