The 600s and smaller use a permanent magnet alternator and an external shunt regulator; the alternator produces max power all the time, and the VRR dumps excess volts to ground. The 1ks and 750s use a car-style "excited field" or "variable field" alternator, where the internal VR controls the voltage / power generated directly by throttling the current through the excitation coils. A separate (but still internal) rectifier turns the regulated AC into DC.

I *think* the various VRs from various years of 1k and 750 are interchangeable, but don't spend money on my say-so without doing more reading / part number checking.

DonTZ125 wrote:*sigh* Yup, the bigger bikes use a car-style alternator with a variable-field regulator that adjusts the strength of the magnetic field around the windings; the smaller bikes use permanent-magnet alternators and shunt regulators that are far more likely to fry out.

That was silly of me... screwy
also found this ^^ so my question now is what would cause the lights to dim a considerable amount when the bike is at idle , and they even dim at speed when the brake light is activated ...so is this the VR or somthing else, or is it just normal ??? thanks for the info ... fyi this is on a 1988 fzr1000

yea .. don u beat me too it ,, ... but still the question remains as to what is causing the dimming of the lights? when at speed it isnt bad .. barely noticeable but at idle it a pretty noticeable difference.... maybe the batt is low or dry .. i'll check that first

There are two kinds of posts on Forums.
1. This is what I have done...
2. This is what I think...
Be aware of the difference!

Look in the manual - here's the charging system.
