seems the qusetion we should be answering since Mr Yamaha gave us TCI which finding a C-O-P solution is difficult and quiet a few people are interested in mappable ignitions lets ee what we can mate .......................
they already sell what is necessary.

MSD MC-3 or MC-4.

The MC-3 will use the stock pickup signal.

$439 from summit racing

the MC-3 is programmable via dip switches (like the V&H powerpack.....gets you CD ignition, and multiple spark discharge, plus adj. rev limiter and also an interruptor for air shifting.

The MC-4 ($659) is programmable via PC, and includes everything above, plus a bunch of other stuff(like individual cylinder control and retard for startup). You have to use their pickups.

RR,
that last piece is very nice BUT it cost as much as my darnb bike and unless i went racing ................
and If in seven years when the govt takes my licence away I doubt any one would be willing to come up with a decent deal to justify that cost.

I can justify my time spent on a project but a full cash outlay hmmm that is another matter.

Well, the pooled cost to reverse engineer it wouldnt' be so bad.....and also I posted that to show that it CAN and HAS been done....and that stock pickup coil is usable in a CDI system.

Coil on plug mod using the CBR coils is done!

I just rode the bike and it rides exactly as it did with the stock coils.

I took lots o' pics. Write up to follow.

NICE, how did you wire it into the system? Have you drawn up a wire diagram yet?

I used the wiring diagram I posted earlier in this thread.

I tested my coil on plug mod in the rain finally, and I had no loss of performance. I can attribute this to the tight seal that the F4i coils create around the spark plugs, as well as the modern weatherpack connectors used in the stock honda wiring.

Hi, I'm new to the forum.

Olie, I had just read your posting for the COP conversion. I've got weak spark, which I blame on 21 year old plug wires. As I can't just replace the made to the coil wires, I've been thinking about the conversion. The last update I read from you was in July of 2010. At that time the system was still working good. I am a little concerned about how it will effect my TCI. So, since it's now been almost 2 years for your conversion I wanted to ask, is your TCI still hanging in there, or have there been any issues? Any info you can give me would be a big help. I'll also PM you, in case you don't check this thread often. Thanks.

Well, it has been almost two years since my conversion and I can say that it still works without a problem. I have probably put 15,000 miles on my bike since the conversion, and have not had any problems with it.

Hi olie05,
Just reading your How To: Coil over plug (COP) mod using F4/F4i coils (nice write up)
Thinking I should turn my attention to reconditioning my ignition system and maybe upgrading it.

In your write up you say you tested the stock coils to be about 4.2ohms. ??
both the 400 and 600 service manuals list 1.8 - 2.2 ohms for the primary coil.

I am also trying to confirm in primary resistance for the CBR600 cops.
Where did you get that info?

Thanks

I measured my stock fzr 600 coils to be 4.2ohms. I never looked at the manual, I just went off of what I measured. My bike was running fine when I took the coils out, so I didn't hesitate to use my measurements to decide on wiring. My memory is a little fuzzy on this, but I'm pretty sure I just measured all the f4i coils (4 of them) that I had available to me. They all measured within 3.0-3.3 ohms on my meter. Could be different for you. The CBR manual does not list the primary coil resistance in terms of OHMs, rather it asks you to check the coil peak voltage to determine functionality of the coils.

I measured the primary coil resistance because I wanted to make sure I wasn't straying too far from what I had before. This helped me decide if I wanted to wire them in parallel or series. The way I wired the coils (series) should be less likely to burn out the TCI transistors, because there is a larger resistance than stock. If you were to wire the coils in parallel, you would get a lower overall resistance and higher current through the transistors. The trade off is that there is potentially more spark voltage if you wire them up in parallel.

Moral of the story, I didn't really go by the manuals on my resistances. :)

I'm going to add this to my sh!ts and giggles projects. Nice work olie.

So the reason for doing this is to remove those two big coil packs in the frame by the thermostat? I suppose you lose a lb or two doing this.

Yeah I'd imagine the reason to do this is for space savings.
