UPDATE:
Well, my calling around to a bunch of local shops today has hopefully paid off. A friend of mine has a small shop on the outskirts of town, and found me a running 96 bike that his buddy was wanting to part out. I'm heading over tomorrow to go check it out and work out some pricing if everything checks out well. I've got my fingers crossed.

Well, as it turned out the guy who has the parts bike is someone I haven't seen in 10 years. It was crazy running into him under circumstances like these. We chatted a bit and caught up, got to meet his family ( 4 kids 0.o)
The bike didn't even end up being an FZR, but a YZF600... Looks like I might be doing a YZF engine swap and swingarm conversion
Said he'd sell me everything for $450 since he just bartered for it anyway. We'll see what happens, but it looks like I might have just found me a good deal.

Re: The new project 91 FZR w pics
Alright, threads been dead since I have been waiting on my tax return to come in to get funds for my project. Refund finally came, so I've been getting some more things done.
I ordered a trailtech vapor speedo for it, and a streetfighter dual headlight setup for it. Should be coming in very soon.
I decided not to go with the YZF motor and swingarm. It wasn't as good of a deal as I had thought. The bike was someones stuntbike, and it didnt have a title which made me a bit nervous. I ended up finding a nice FZR600 motor from one of my customers who races WERA for $450. I got it today, and just got finished swapping it into my FZR. I'll get some pics up tomorrow when the lighting is better.
I pulled the clutch cover, and it looked immaculate. The oil that came out was a nice tan color, didnt have water in it, and the clutch boss hardly looked worn. The gears on the clutch basket hardly looked broken in The peanut cover had some nice scrapes on it, so I am assuming this was a salvaged motor from an accident. Wasnt able to get mileage from the bike it came out of, but seeing how nice the inside was I think I found a winner. The spark plugs that came out of it even looked nice!
I'll fire it up tomorrow and let everyone know how it does.

Re: The new project 91 FZR w pics
its alive.... ITS ALIIIIVVEEE!!!
After getting everything properly situated, routed, tightened, and an oil change I decided that it was time to fire the FZR up and see how well this new motor would work.
I let the fuel pump fully prime the carburetors, and after a few coughs and sputters it fired up really strong. After getting the idle settled in and giving it some nice revvs it was finally time to take it on its maiden voyage... err.. ride... whatever
I took it for a couple of rides around the neighborhood, cycled through all of the gears to make sure they all worked, and couldnt believe how well it was running. It doesnt smoke at all, seriously! For a salvage engine I couldnt have ended up with a better one.
Brought it back, made a few tweaks and figured it was time to take it out around town. I took it on a couple of short errands, and then after getting a bit braver I took it out on the loop around town. It tracks like its on rails, and screams up to speed like it should. I probably took it faster than I should have, but I was so excited that it was hard to hold back.
I am so happy, I finally have a nice running FZR once again! All is well with the world.
I know I said I'd get some pics up today. Well... ya might have to wait til tomorrow. The thing is... I was out on it pretty much all day long so it's too dark to get any good pics right now. LoL
I think I'll go out on another ride and call it a night.

Oh it's far from over, this is just the beginning. I'm still going to be putting pics up as I streetfighter this thing.nortstudio wrote:Always good to hear a happy ending!
I've already got an acerbis styled headlight piece for it, and a trailtech vapor speedo on the way. As soon as they come in and I get a longer brake line for the master cylinder, I am putting the dirtbike bars on it with a set of bark busters. Still need to repaint the thing, and also put a pipe on it to get some sound out of it. There's plenty more to come

Re: The new project 91 FZR w pics
You were doing all that riding with no pipe????
Glad to hear you were able to have a good time today. Nothing better.
I thought I was done with my painting - but some final step I did messed up the top coat - so ill have to get back to clear coat it agiain sometime soon.
I began putting it all back together though. Looks good even with the
paint. Just being black is a huge improvement
With the weather we have been having, I'm pumped to get back on it with fresh suspension front and rear, and the new MC.
Keep the updates coming - cant wait to see how she looks as a street fighter!

Glad to hear yours is coming along as well, maybe I should take my time with the paint this time. I've always just rattle canned the plastics whatever color I wanted and called it good

Re: The new project 91 FZR w pics
I was just rattle can this time too - but somehow either some really fine (2000 grit wet sand) or some crappy cut and polish left some cloudy looking parts to the pieces.
I'll get it. Needed to step away from the project today - its been a month of painting and waiting....

OK ok, A week late I know. lost the data cord to my cellphone til yesterday.
Here's what the bike looks like til I repaint it sometime this week. Let me know what you think about it
I still need to put the dirtbike bars on once I get a longer brake line.
Enjoy!
