I found a 91 engine w/ trapezoid front headlight..worth it?

Post by match417 »

I found a guy on craigslist locally selling the all fiberglass fairings (link below) for a 91 trapezoid headlight. I told him I would buy the front fairing, engine (17k miles), carbs and all the electronics for $230. It has a vance and hines starter gear cover. Engine is oxidized on the outside but runs (supposedly), he said he just snapped the clutch push-rod when he was taking off the clutch cover. Do you guys think this is an ok deal? I know the push rod comes out easy, as long as it's not broken off inside the motor. If it is, is there an easy way to take it out without separating the case?

The fairings are also all fiberglass, with a passenger seat cover built in. Obviously aftermarket, but they look just like the FZR stock ones. I guess they should mate up with my plastic fairings. The link below shows the fairings, anyone know what brand they are and if my plastic side fairings would mate with the fiberglass front fairing?

I'm not buying all of the fairings, just the front. I have two sets of side fairings, then my r6 tail and r6 tank. He said he would sell all of the fiberglass fairings for $200 with nothing else.

The no trapezoid headlight upper fairing will not work with the the dual light side panels.

Just so you know.

Clutch pushrod just pushes thru the transmission countershaft. Pull the clutch pressure plate and the sprocket cover and you can look through the bike-side to side with the pushrod out. I believe a 1/4" ratchet extension works to push the broken piece out.

My bike is a 91 with a trapezoid headlight and no front fairing, but my fairings are plastic. These are fiberglass, are made for the single headlight, and are aftermarket. Since I"m just getting the fiberglass front fairing I want to be sure it will mate up with my plastic side fairings.

What?
I dunno what happened there. it was supposed to be:

"the '91/trapezoid headlight upper will not work with the dual light side panels"....

At least, that is what I recall about selling such parts, back IN '91.

But as someone else already said:

still a good buy

I'm pretty sure all side fairings are interchangeable across all years on the fzr600 U.S models. 200 is a good price for a nice set of fairings fiberglass or not. I've seen brand new unpainted fiberglass sides for $150ea if you need a baseline

Also why I did not understand the post. The side panel are in fact interchangeable. I have both a 91-92 uppper (race) and a 97 street upper and all I have to change is the birdcage. (I don't use the mirror stay nor the "frame coolers")

Also, since you are in HI I'd just buy it for parts. I'm sure it's not like FZR parts are cheap and plentiful in HI.

just got the engine out of the bike and back to my house, along with all the electrical components, carbs, front and side fairings, and two kn filters. The guy charged me $20 for delivery, and I gave him a little extra for the fiberglass side fairings. Amazing price.

It turns out that the clutch push rod wasn't broken, the guy just thought it was, he though it was connected to the clutch cover somehow. sweet! I've never bought so much stuff for $260. Thank God! He rocks!!

I think you did the smart thing getting all that stuff. So what bike do you have that these parts will be transferred to? A 91 FZR600?

yeah, it's a 91 FZR600. It looks like the PO did a front end conversion to the 91/92 style. The serial on the engine starts with 3UU, and my 91 engine starts with 3HH. So I don't know what year it is. I've got the engine in now, engine covers switched over, fairings on, and most of the harness connected. Now it's getting dark so I'm at a stopping point. Will finish it up tomorrow.
