Yeah its going better than i thought it would, i thought with it being a 20 year old bike i'd run in to a fair few tough nuts and bolts but so far its been a pleasure to work on with only three bolts snapping on me.

I got it up on the rear paddock stand yesterday. Gotta get the front up on the stand but not sure how to use the front one, anyone care to shed some light on this? The stand has 2 prongs either side where the bottom of the fork legs should sit but the both appear to wide and look as if the fork leg would just slide through the middle??? May have to ask the father for advice....

Should be something like this, depending on the stands you got

I have a rear paddock stand. I think the next one I am going to get is going to be an Abba stand though. Supports the bike but still lets you remove the whole front end of the bike, much more like what I need!

I managed to get the R6 V/regulator on the bike over the weekend and I must say the front projector headlights are quite a bit brighter! I had an old FZR indicator relay with the loom clip attached so used that to hook up the existing wires to the new V/R. Fitted the new exhaust hanger and a new rear indi bulb and that was about as much as my cold hands could take. :grinnod:

Just all the clock bulbs to change and the clutch springs when I get a chance!

Yeah i looked into an abba stand but you cant have the front and rear elivated at the same time and thats what i wanted for over the winter keep the tyres off the ground till there indoors :). And it means i can remove the eninge as once thats out i can just rest the frame on a metal box. Get yourself some thermal running gloves from sportsdirect, made of lycra, keep your hands warm but allow you to do the fiddly jobs as well unlike normal gloves.

Er yes you can there is a seperate stand you can buy. it goes under the bike to lift both ends up. I'll try to find it on the net.

Well had a few hours with the bike today and got a bit done to it, I've managed to strip out the engine fully so its now pretty much just a rolling chassis, surprising how easy it came out since last time it was out it was a struggle with even two people,

Image

So with that done I decided to work on the swingarm brace and get the measurements megawatt asked me to get, these measurements where
  • [li]Rear outside width of swingarm - 290mm[/li]
    [li]Rear inside width of swingarm - 230mm[/li]
    [li]Front outside width of swingarm - 200mm[/li]
    [li]Front inside width of swingarm - 140mm[/li]
    [li]Width of box section - 30mm[/li]
    [li]Thickness of steel - 2mm[/li]
[li]Length of arms from front of suspension brace - 452mm[/li]
[li]Length of arms from rear of suspension brace - 422mm[/li]
[li]Centre of wheel spindle to top of chain on the rear sprocket - 125mm[/li]
With these measurement I made the a model of the proposed chain guard and it looks like this

Image

Tomorrow i hope to get the model fitted to the bike with everything that could cause a problem fitted as well, i should imagine this will include the rear brake torque arm? the chain is still fitted so shall just have to sort that out although I would of thought that couldn't caust to much hassle as long as the brace sits high enough from the arms (130mm should do it).

Just a quick update, have been preoccupied (drinking) so not had a chance to get on here to update, I left the bike just a rolling chassis, however now its not a rolling chassis....

Image

With the frame virtually stripped i set about the swingarm brace, I managed to source some 25mm x 25mm off cuts of pine to make a 'solid' model from so i can man handle it a bit and get it all mocked up. I settled on an underbrace as it makes life easier for Megawatt when he's building it for me :). The main worry was the clearances between the brace supports and the suspension unit, and the chain against the brace clearance.

Image

As you can see theres plenty of clearance between the suspension and brace, and should be more when i fit the jack up kit. I ran into one problem which was if the brace followed the shape of the arm, the chain only had around 5mm of clearance from the arm, this was with the brace underslung at 140mm, so after speaking to Mega, we decided that if the brace is underslung at 165mm this gives more clearance for the chain and still leaves plenty of clearance for the suspension movement along with ground clearance. Unfortunately I've got no decent pictures of the brace fitted only this one.

Image

The swingarm is now out of the bike and ready to be sent to Mega, I've just got to source a cardboard box big enough and strong enough to hold it all.

Along with making me the swingarm brace, Mega is also making me a custom chain guard out of stainless steel, so I've come up with a design idea which i saw on another brace but have changed it slightly more to my taste. (the bottom one is the final design, the red bits will be cut out)

Talking of powder, these people have been recommended by a couple of friends - so I will be sending my gear there. They specialise in bike stuff so they are very good at keeping bearing orifices and threads clear :grinnod:

I managed to get out and change my clutch springs today and had a little fettle with my FZR400.

There pictures show good work but, West yorkshire is a tad far, I wouldn't really trust parcelforce or the like looking after the freshly powdered parts that just cost me topside of 200 notes, theres a place down the road from me that i'm gonna check out

Look forward to your updates and seeing how it all goes.
