Lockable hard luggage on the FZR :)

Post by ranmafan »

Figured someone may be interested.

First of all, the bike (FZR/YZF 660 mod) as it stands now (Tremclad/Rustoleum paint job. Yay for Autoglym):

The boxes are 50 cal/7.62mm ammo boxes, easily found in many military surplus/farm stores (picked mine up in Princess Auto for $10 each). Made lockable with a right size U-bolt.

Not exactly spacious, but enough for short(er) trips. For longer trips, I just throw a duffle bag/cargo net on top. No more scratches!

The mount itself is also a fairly simple affair, made from an assortment of regular steel tubing/corners from a hardware store. No welding whatsoever.

Blasphemous, isn't it? :drink: Feel free to bash away.

Ok. Now I've seen everything. Lol. That's a good idea that you have there. Might not hold a lot but it holds what you need. Keep up the good work.

I see a lot of standard nuts there. My concern would be vibration shaking the whole assembly loose - once any one nut starts to back off, all those lovely long levers act as wrenches undoing the next one. Blue loctite would be a very good idea ...

Actually, just PAINTING the fasteners to match the black frame will help keep them in place!

Other than that - nice!

Hehe, thanks!

That was my thought, too - but surprisingly, stuff vibrating loose hasn't been an issue even without loctite.

The cheap steel/steel tubing deformed easily when tightening bolts, keeping them in place... And so in the few months/few thousand km I've had the thing on, every single fastener stayed tight, even the bottom footpeg mounts (unlike, say, chain adjuster bolts, which I have to loctite/check regularly...)

But yeah, I ought to do it - just in case - the next time I take it apart (there is a LOT of nuts in there!)

(On a side note, Krylon "universal" spray paint/primer were utterly useless. I don't know why I even bothered. Tremclad looks far better, does not need the clear and seems much more durable.)
