Hi All

Okay whilst out on my little 400 the other day, the above mentioned unit decided it didn't want to play anymore and burnt out, (clue was lots of smoke when I stopped). I've already purchased a new one. But I need some advice. Having tried my sons 600 rectifier on my bike she started okay but when I put her under load to 3000rpm the fuse blew, but the multimeter attached to the battery did not show silly amounts of voltage (13.5 peak). Is there anything else I should check before I put the new reg/rec on to avoid anymore damage.

Check the condition and security of the VRR connector pins; there may be some damage. Also check the condition and security of the black ground wire at the VRR, at the battery, and at the frame / engine ground point (follow the black wire down from the battery).

Just to let you know, The new reg/rec arrived today so I checked the resistance on the generator, checked the battery again, fitted the new reg/rec and pushed the button. It started eventually!!!! god it hates the damp weather. revvved her through the rev range with no adverse effects all voltages read good. Just got to work out my sons reg/rec now, sounds like it could be dodgy, but it is fairly new, so checking his generator first. We have a spare from his old engine thankfully. also have an R6 reg on it's way to us so we can do the conversion I've read about on here.

You should have no worries with hooking up anew VR as this has been done by just about everyone on the Forum and there are pictures of the mod (people have changed mounting places too) all over.

Dunno about that YG Electrics aren't my best bit of bike knowledge. but i'll give it a go and learn I suppose. thanks

Shameless plug - if the OEM connector is in good shape, I make an adaptor harness that makes upgrading the VRR plug'n'play - no wiring, cutting, or soldering.

2nd question. How much to ship one of your connectors to the UK cause that would be great for my limited electrical knowledge.

Hi, S.

The upgrade will work on your 400 the same way it works on the 600s; the two models used the same VRR.

Shipping to the UK (Small Packet Air) will be $11, 6-10 business days.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a word with my son. It's his bike that needs the TLC at the moment. But he is getting a little fed up with it and mentioned selling it when we have it running again because of the problem it has been. But I might have one later on. :cheers:

I would break it gently to your son that all bikes (& anything else man made) old & new do give problems and that we as rider/owners as men should learn from that.

Which is why this site exists to ease the frustration of "re-inventing the wheel"

I understand what you're saying YG. But he is really fed up with it. He also has A 600 Diversion and that was a right heap of poo and it has been so reliable. This FZR looks extremely clean from the outside but is an absolute nightmare. I help all i can but he's only young and doesn't want to keep throwing money at it. I've even offered him a straight swap with my 400.

The Diversion was a very reliable mild tuned bike and would take endless abuse, the FZR is a totally different story, they invite being raced/thrashed and were built quite close to the edge as witnessed by the Gearbox & VR on the bike.

Like another favourite bike of mine the RD/RZ/LC yamaha series they go like stink but they do need a lot of TLC & attention.

I hope you can talk to your son, getting it right gives a lot of satisfaction and sense of achievment that just going in to a store and buying the latest & greatest cannot ever match.

I'll talk to him yes. When we get it right he may change his mind. When we've been out together, it's been great, 2 FZR's together and over to the local bike meet. I'm hoping he will. :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Well to end the story we have now fully sorted my sons 600, R6 reg/rec wired in, all wiring sorted and tidied up and it runs sweetly, all lights etc work. God I'm proud of us as we have never gone into wiring so deeply before and what a learning curve that was :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: He rode off with a massive smile on his face. Now unsure whether to sell. I think he'll keep it.

It certainly was a learning curve, one that i new want to see again! Im still unsure but im swaying towards it
