Starting issue
So the issue is when I push start it sounds like the battery is dead. I replaced the battery with a new battery. I charged it for 24 hours. and went to crank it. I have the same issue. The battery reads 13.3 volts on the terminals, and drops when I crank it, but bounces back after. Any ideas?

If the engine tumbles over but does not fire it can be only one of two things, spark or fuel. Under these circumstances I always put in new freshly gapped pugs.
Tumble engine, if it fails check each plug to see it is wet from flooding with fuel and if each one is in fact getting enough current to fire a spark.

Re: Starting issue
The bike sounds like its not getting enough power to full turn over. The engine will crank, but it does it slowly. Its a brand new battery that was charged for 12 hours before I hooked it up to the bike. I will make a video in a while, to show what its doing.

Re: Starting issue
A quick guess, and prolly something you have already checked. Whats the condition of both main terminals/connections on the start relay, and the condition of the connection on the starter motor?
Other than that worn brushes in the starter motor? You have something somewhere that is sucking all the juice outa the battery. Also check the ground on the engine.

Re: Starting issue
As said that tumble is too slow and current is being diverted from the battery, I noticed the tail lamp in the vid blinks and I always thought that US bikes cut lights when starting?CJD wrote:A quick guess, and prolly something you have already checked. Check ALL your ignition system connections for corrosion and as said by CJD the engine ground wires need to be clean for all electrics to work well.

Re: Starting issue
I will give all the electric connections a cleaning and see what happens. I have had the battery sitting on the trickle charger since yesterday.

Re: Starting issue
Check your battery fluid levels. When you say you charged it for 24hrs (you also said you charged it for 12 hrs), was this on the trickle charge? Was this 0.1A/hr, or 2A/hr, or ... ?
YG - only the headlights and dash backlights cut out on cranking; the tail lights stay on. That flickering of the tail is due to the battery being drawn down.

Re: Starting issue
Don
The initial charge was with a battery tender auto charger. That charged almost 24 hours. Then I put the battery on the bike and tried to start it. It had the same problem. Thus far I have cleaned and added a grounding strap. Cleaned the power wires. When I had the power wire off I found a bad connector. I replaced it. I took the power wire off the starter, and gave it a scrub with the wire brush on both ends. I even touched the starter power wire right to the battery. It turned over with the same slow crank. Could the issue be the starter? Is there a way to test it? I know autoparts stores can test car starters, maybe they can try mine out. Any ideas. Electrical issues is not my strong suit.

Re: Starting issue
J,
Is the battery the right power rating for the bike, I know you said it was new but if it does not have the right spec .........
I get the impression from your talk of slow tumbling/cranking that the battery is just not giving out enough juice, if you have a car how about using it's battery to crank the bike over.
Please be careful of your connection polarity when you do this !!!

Re: Starting issue
Problem solved! The starter is bad. I took it to the auto parts store and had them put it on a test bench. When its energized it does not turn very well. It grinds along while turning over, plus it will stop all together. Time for a new starter.

Re: Starting issue
My new (to me) starter came in yesterday. I put it on, and hooked it up. Presto she fires right up now. I replaced a lot of main electrical wires and made new grounds. Hope all of this made a difference. If not it looks nice.
Thanks for the help guys.
