Re: My Topic

Post by trifgeorge »

Since I'm waiting for my VR I thought that it would be a good ideea to start doing crash pads for my bike.
I had the old handlebars from the OEM fzr forks that were laying around the garage and the bar ends. So i cut the handlebars in half and welded them to the engine mounting rails. Then I screwed in the bar ends and they were ready.

Would love to see you try and get away with that plate mount over here! hehe!
I'd be careful of those crash bars, if it goes sliding it may well just wrench the frame tube and end up with it being needed to be replaced at best, but that's just my opinion!

My thought as well. That's gonna dig in and either tear itself out of the frame, or act as a launch point to throw your bike 4 feet in the air and send it tumbling arse over teakettle, smashing and shedding parts as it goes... :yikes:

I hope I'll never need them, but if it will do happen one day , I would rather replace (as they are easy so find) or weld the frame tube than go in a engine cover hunt (as they are quite rare and expensive these days ). I am also thinking about doing a round bar connection from the tip of the slider to the nut where the upper engine mount meets the frame. If I will do that it will look like a half crash cage and it will offer extra support and strenght for the slider if I ever decide to let the bike slide ( bonkonhead I say it like it's an option; to let it slide or not let it slide !! WOOT )

L.E.

As far as the license plate mount, I do get away with it. This specific law , here in Romania, let's me have a lot of options about how I want to mount my license plate. In the law it says that it "has to be in the rear side of the motorcycle" but it does not say the actual position. I have that article from the law always in my wallet and I'm ready to weave it in front of the cop at any hour!

Don,
Don't scare me like that man!! Wouldn't an aftermarket slider mounted on an R6 or R1 do the same?

R1 / R6-style bikes were designed after sliders became popular; their frames are made to take them. Also, these sliders are much closer to the frame (just peeking out of the fairings), and are some hard low-friction plastic similar to what's used on knee sliders.

If you're worried about your case covers, then either make close-fitting cages (there was something posted here or on the Archives not too long ago), or get some GOOD aftermarket covers from Niagara Race Crafters or similar vendors.

As I said, covers are expensive! :D I know that you are right, but that is the best I can do for now, due to lack of fonds. With the fairings on, it does not stick that much out. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them up.

TG,
May I suggest you replace the bar ends with old/new skate board wheel type material that will "sacrifice" it self by scratching rather than the bar ends which could dig in and as suggested flip the bike.

If it does flip you will need to look for a whole lot more than engine covers and as too expense hmm
(do not ask how I know about bar ends and flipped total written off bikes :-{{{{{

Awsome ideea YG!!! I will sure do that!!! I was also thinking about a all axis free spinning ball end. I don't know if you understand what I mean or if I described it right.

TG,
It is a good idea but sadly one I cannot claim as an original , I used it after having to replace the sliders that the PO " scuffed up " and I saw what was on my Ducati riding mate had used on his. So since my lovely Daughters had 3 skate board between them Err the wheels looked like they needed replacing . Ball bearing mounted skate wheels work quite well :-}
