carb rebuild kit for a '90?

Post by Sikowanalize »

I've searched and searched with no luck. A 1990 fell into my hands, it needs lots of love. It has white exhaust smoke while running, transmission does not want to shift into second, and it stalls as soon as it's put into gear from neutral.

She ran for a bit, the stalling once into a gear other than neutral is fairly new. The kickstand switch has not been a problem, so i'm assuming it's carb related. Does anyone know of where I can find a carb rebuild kit? I've looked though a bunch of the parts diagrams online, but am not excited to pay $20 for one o-ring.

I am planning to do a complete rebuild. Starting with the carbs, I want to completely overhaul them and add the nickel-plated emulsion tubes. Other than that, i'm open to ideas. I do have a haynes manual in my possession and plan to build/purchase a synch tool

Does anyone know what the letters after the model are for? I believe I have a FZR1000A (I know the C is for the Cali model). Are they just to state the years? FZR1000B = 1991, FZR1000D = 1992? I found a carb rebuild kit for an FZR1000B, but not A :(

thanks

The first letter is the year; A = 1990, B = 1991. The California models added a C, so you have the 1990 FZR1000AC, the 1991 FZR1000BC, and the 1992 FZR1000DC. I assume they didn't use the 'C' as a model year by itself (in North America, anyway) to avoid confusion with the Cali suffix.

The FZR1000A and B (non-Cali) use the same part numbers for the carburetors, so I'm going to assume a rebuild kit for a 'B' will work on an 'A'.

You DO have a lot of work ahead of you. White smoke is often coolant (head gasket); a bad tranny means a complete engine tear-down to replace worn or damaged parts. The stalling sounds like the side stand switch - clean it, replace it, or just unplug it and jumper the connector (don't forget to lift your stand!).

Thanks for the headsup on the carb kits, I figured they would be similar but wasn't for certain. I figured the white smoke was from coolant or valve related. I wish I knew how many miles were on this bike...I plan on rebuilding the tranny, but i'm uncertain of what i'll need to replace exactly. I know 2nd gear issues are common. I suppose i'll find out when I rip it open. I was reading in the manual about needing a press to do some of the work, can you get away without it? Seems funny the stand switch would go like that. The bike has been worked on by fools, so I can only imagine what I will find. Check out what I found when my throttle would stick:

the decelerator cable end had frayed and broken off. that's not dangerous or anything... the wiring is for the start switch. I found it like that when I pulled the loom off. I literally laughed.

Here are a few others of what I did the first day I got her. I can't store her at home (unless I want to get kicked out) so i'm doing all the work at a storage unit. how's that for a challenge?

That's all I had done before I got the manual, i'm patiently waiting until the temps rise a bit before I really tear into the carbs.
