FZR To R6 Brake Swap Q's

Okay so last night i swapped my old worn brakes for the 02 R6 brake calipers, master cylinder, and lines. Pretty simple if i do say so myself! Minus all the brake bleeding i had to do haha.

Anyway i kinda tried searching around and seeing if anyone else had this problem but couldnt really find too much. Everythings tightened down really well and there are no leaks yet and its been 2 days so i hope im good.

When im riding and i pull the brake lever theres plenty of pressure there (my lever doesnt hit the handlebar or anything) but it seems slightly sluggish slowing down. Im sure i got all the air out even the smallest bubbles, and i tapped the m/c to make sure and bled both calipers. I feel like ive tried everything, this shouldnt be this difficult haha

Im somewhat stumped here! :headscratch:

I meant to add one more thing, my fzr lines were steel braided so maybe im just not used to the rubber, i dont know.
But they should be interchangeable right? Thanks

You should be able to reuse those stainless lines.

One reason it would be sluggish is due to still having air in the lines... make sure that when you do it that all of the air has the ability to rise to the top. I removed my MC from the bike so I could tilt it up properly.

When you say removed did you just unbolt it from the handlebar? Thanks

What pads are you using, how old are they, how many time have you stopped with that combination of pad/rotor?

I would redo the bleed and then go out and ride it a few more days and see if it gets better as the pads wear in with the rotors.

Well story goes like this, i actually have an 02 r6 that ive been workin on as well, so i took the brakes off of it and slapped them on the fizz. I had to replace the hose from the reservoir to the mc because it had been cut or somethin. then i continued to bleed them. As far as i know the pads are stock with who knows how many miles.. But today was the first day i rode since i did the swap, maybe 12 miles so far.
I'll take your advice and re-bleed them an keep riding. I was gonna change the pads soon and actually get new rotors theyre kinda worn.

another trick to try is to tie the brake lever on (cable tie to the bar) overnight and then try rebleeding, no idea how or why it works but a mate of mine works on bikes and it worked well when I did the lines on mine!

Hi,
the idea is to get the lever held in a position where the lines bleed back into the reservois directly not just at the top of the line, when left over night the air in the fluid (that you put there by pouring and may be pumping too fast ) to rise and join with other minute bubbles and get out to the res. not the line where any pumping by you will distribute it again.


As for feeling sluggish on stopping
a} pad wear does not "fit" the new rotors so minimal touching
b} air in the line
c} the rubber line is old and swells with pressure

The pads can be removed and rubbed on sand paper on a flat surface (glass sheet) to get any previous wear pattern warps removed

re-bleed leave over night as described

replace lines with s/steel with the best will in the world nearly 20 year old rubber is NOT upto the cost of your life !!!

If you have good feel at the brake lever and it is not hitting your grip, then this is not a brake bleeding issue. I think your calipers are gunked up and need to be cleaned.

I have a feeling it's my pads and calipers, nonetheless Ill pick up some new pads. How would I go about cleaning the calipers?

VERY carefully any corrosion should be wiped off with nothing courser than old newspaper & brake cleaner liquid, sorry but I recently saw (elsewhere i might add) the pistons being cleaned with emery cloth ehhh! :duh:

I saw a video on YouTube of blue spots being cleaned an put back together. Might try a search there. I would do it but I'm at work and might get in trouble. Haha
