Electrical Issue, help needed

Post by _Will_ »

Fresh charged battery with only two starts on it, bike was running and starting fine and then nothing when I tried to start it after putting the fairings back on. By nothing I mean no head lights, no gauge lights, no oil, neutral, or turn signals, and no fuel pump priming. Does not crank over. When it died the oil light glowed dim for a split second before all went dark but nothing else. What I've done so far is

-checked the battery, around 12.6 volts. Even if it wouldn't fire that should be plenty to give me some lights
-checked the battery connections by measuring from the cables themselves and they're fine
-checked and rechecked the fuses, both visually and then with a fuse checker. This includes the 4 in the box and the separate main one
-checked and rechecked my connections and looked for anything loose or grounding
-tried with the kick stand up and down
-made sure it was in neutral

from multiple attempts starting it the batter has dropped to 8.6ish so it's on the charger. The charge is going somewhere but there's nothing to see for it. The 12.6 measurement was after sitting for several days and even then the 8.6 should still at least give lights.

I'm stumped, supposed to go hit the drag strip tomorrow to run just for the heck of it and last time we went my throttle cable snapped on the side of the interstate so I don't want to miss this trip.

it seems the battery isn't able to hold a load. Tried the key when hooked up to the charger and had lights. If it works I'll post up tomorrow and will hopefully have some track times.

result: the new battery did the trick, got her back together and headed to the strip tonight to see what she pulls. I'm expecting 14's and hoping to break into the 12's since that seems what they usually make.
