Leakage of oil

Post by DrHeckley »

So, I left college this evening, rode 10 miles home, and as I pulled into the garage and turned her off I noticed a puddle right in front of the rear tire. Upon inspection, I noticed oil covering the swingarm right in front of the rear tire as well. Further inspection led me to find a hose ending abruptly on the swing arm to be the source of this oil. Any advice as to a) what this hose is and b) why it's suddenly spewing oil all over my lady? Thank you :)

My guess is that it is the drain hose from the airbox. You may have oil spewing up the vent line from the engine case into the airbox. There is a small drain line fitted with a check valve that will prevent build up of fluids in the airbox. This line dumps near the swing arm (Usually). Passing oil through the breather hose to the air box is usually due to an overfilled crankcase. You may have meticulously filled the engine with the proper amount of oil but check it anyway. When parked with the petcock in the run or reserve position, fuel and gravity feed through the pump and into the carbs. The needle and seat in these carbs will not always shut off tight. The fuel can either overflow onto the ground or overflow into the engine and cause your oil level to rise.

Check it out and see if the oil level is high. If so, problem solved. Change the oil, clean up the mess on your bike, and always shut off the petcock when parked.

Hey Doc,

If that was all it is then its an easy fix. Keep your eyes open for other odd things you have inherited from the PO. If the oil smells of fuel then read my first post.
