Gotta agree with Don here and edan with the starter clutch.

You can push start on hell your drive way.. I had to push start my bike for a week straight because the battery was on its last legs.. just waddle your way along and dump the clutch.

Hi - I had similar problems with bound on clutch plates - this resulted from the bike being stored for 5 years. I warmed some oil in a pan and poured it through the oil filler using a turkey baster (over the clutch plates) - having left it over night I put the bike in gear and rocked it back and fourth. This freed the stuck plates. It saved me from having to strip the clutch.

can you select the gears OK i.e. when up on a stand and turning the back wheel ? I had all sorts of engagement problems - This was because someone in the past had taken off the gear selector linkage and had not lines up the two dots (one on the input shaft and one on the gear lever) - a quick rotation through 90 degrees solved my problems.

the wining or clicking sound is likely to be the fuel pump that runs until the float bowls are full with fuel - it wont stop until they fill. You could try a couple of squirts of 'quick start fluid' in the carbs - works wonders to kick it into life !

i would be careful attempting a bump start particularly if the clutch is engaged as you may go out of contol if you know what I mean

when you crank the engine can you smell petrol ? have you checked for sparks at the plug ?

was gunna say - it hard to see from your pictures but the throttle cables dont look right - there is a metal sleeved end on the end of the pull cable (the one on top). this slots into the metal piece on the carb return mechanism (the 2 nuts go on the end to lock the cable in place) - I have got mine stripped at the moment - if you need a picture PM me.

as for the clutch when I dont mine - just put a long tube on the slave cylinder - clamp your mouth around the end and 'suck baby'. keep the res topped up and just pump the lever. Took 5 minutes. once it starts to flow, submerge the end in a jar with a small amount of fluid. Always pinch up the bleed nipple whilst slowly pulling the lever to prevent air from returning.

RAW a pic would be great. I'm getting snap back since I swapped the cables, but it's not as much as before I took it apart. Could just need more adjustment. I drained the oil tonight, I'm going to check the starter clutch first then work to the possible stuck clutch plates. Where is the starter clutch cover? Can I get to/replace this without having to rip out the engine? TIA.

haha yeah it does sound crazy but IT WORKS!! i remember trying to push start my 89 600 it could take up to 30 mins of running down the road and back while everyone just points and laughs and im late for work. but its up to him how he gets it started its his bike

I know edan just the idea and seeing people screw up n things go wrong isn't the brightest thing to suggest lol

Any kind of bump starting should do it. Even if its on a paddock stand and you spin the rear wheel, pop the clutch n let her fire up..

the starter clutch can be removed / inspected with the engine in the frame. Its under the forwardmost of the two right hand covers (nearest to the rad). The manual explains the procedure that is relatively simple. you have PM

For the starter clutch cover... I have the clutch plate cover and a little 3 screw cover right next to that. In the haynes manual it shows a 5 screw cover. Is this the same thing? The screws stripped on my first try to take any of them out, so I'm working on that one right now... TIA.

So it's official. The engine DOES need to be removed to replace the starter clutch on the FZR1000. I'm not afraid of doing that, but it's just an awful amount of work. Anyone have thoughts on doing this a different way, or does anyone have a very low mileage fzr1000 engine for sale? I'm surprised with only 36K on the bike that the starter clutch would be toast. Is this common?

36000 miles? yeah that seems about right. i have an xj 750 with 15000 that needs its replaced

have you changed the oil? sometimes that fixes starter clutch issues.

I've changed the oil twice in the whole month I've owned, and rode it less than 20 miles. Bah, making space in the basement to work on this thing... New starter clutch is $104 and change. Anyone have a better price? Is there anything else I'll need to replace when I take this apart?

mark all the wires with masking tape and numbers or letters so that it guys in easy, take you're time and record/take pictures of everything if you're un certain!!

BTW.. I HOPE you have a manual of some sorts...
