Help...leaking gas

so noticed that a big pool of gas leaked out overnight........about a gallon! WTF

floats might be stuck. can you tell where the gas is coming from? Its probably from running ethanol, it has a tendancy to gum up the carbs. Try some fuel system cleaner and be sure to open and close your choke multiple times to help break down/clear out some of the trash

Hmm, petcock open /closed should not matter the carbs mechanism is meant to deal with that on any bike.

Why have them checked when you can do it yourself?

I needed my first FZR 600's carbs synched and they told me something crazy like 400.00 - surprising that shop folded....but it got me looking on FZR Online in the first place

I remember having a discussion on the archives about this, having to turn the petcock off because the fzr will constantly let fuel into the carbs and then overflow BUT the problem in that scenario was it was dumping into the crankcase which I thought would've been a sticky float...

A petcock that says it is in the closed ain't actually always so, guess how i know :-}

FZR's have fuel pump do they not? If the petcock was open and it drained the tank thro the carbs why does the bike need a pump ? Just asking .........................

when you have a leak that size gas pretty much always gets into the cylinder and drains into the oil, i mean think about it the fuel outlets are lower then the vents. and if its ben sitting you might not smell it if u open the fill cap cus gas is lighter than oil but you will notice your oil level is high and when you drain the oil you will get a nice whiff of gas or if you let it go for awhile you will notice your oil turning a spicy brown mustard color or even green some times depending on the gas and the oil. ive even seen them on bikes that sat over the winter were you can see the separation of the gas and oil in the sight glass.

but tearing the carbs down isnt a hard task to do as long as you have a impact driver with quality bits, ive seen one newbie at the shop use a harbor freight one and broke the throat of the carb pounding away and the bits would twist and become useless. and while you have it apart replace the philips screws with allens its only like 4 bux for all 16 screws and they come apart so much easier

FZR's have fuel pump do they not? If the petcock was open and it drained the tank thro the carbs why does the bike need a pump ? Just asking .........................

for when the gas tank is half full or so when the gas line is below the float bowls

On my bike the pump primes itself every start up (as does everyone elses ) is that just a precaution ? Are there in fact two routes for gas into the carbs..............................

When I turn my petcock off, no fuel comes out..

So the 600's use a low psi fuel pump ehhh. I'll find that post on the archives when the server decides not to be a jerk if no one else knows what ima talkin bought

on a 18 year old bike you are lucky if it is the original, I tend to rebuild or replace mine every 15 years as I have found that is safe bet that after that time they are so worn as to dribble.

Mind you Modern petcocks might be better than those prior to '92 as mine was oozing gas when I bought the bike 3 years ago I only noticed it because I had the bike apart on arrival to check the pump /carbs/ and other fluids. It dripped after the pump inlet line was taken off, had I left the line in place and the pump seal being sound as it was there would have been no visible leak.

it is thus that I wondered about there being a 2nd route for fuel to the carbs OR that the fuel is bypassing the pump in some manner ..............................
