Re: Project Freestyle
Ok so I had a couple of small oil leaks and I just took care of them with new seals and such. No more leaks.
Got my self some SS brake lines front and back.
While I was riding home from work on Thursday my Resevoir mount (aluminum bracket) failed in fatigue mode. So I need to devise a new way for mounting that. I have tried a couple of new positions. I think I have something figured out. I will give it a shot tommorow morning and get picture up the brake lines and the new mount location for the shock resevoir.
I also am going to delete my rear brake resevoir and just run it with a plug and leave a little bit of line to behave as a resevoir. I have seen this done before. I don't think the rear brake moves enough fluid for this to ever become an issue. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Aside from that I have been riding the hell out of it and it's tons of fun. Handles great although the suspension needs some set up as it gets squirrelly on me when I push it sometimes The current wheel base is 56" I believe stock is 55.1".
My only complaint is the lack of wind protection riding a naked. Otherwise I couldn't be happier with the final product.

Re: Project Freestyle
Maybe you should take heed of advice when you ask for it.
You asked whats the best method of removing paint from the tank, sweekster replied Paint stripper. You however disregarded that advice, and took a dremel with some kinda grinding wheel and attacked the tank I bet the painter was very pleased. I suspect when TK said FAIL on the paint work he also spotted your blunder.
Those brackets were an instant FAIL, I knew they would vibrate then snap, would you listen probably not. You are a structural engineer after all.
You also have probably the only VR that is water cooled by rain water (probably containing salt and other contaminates) splashed up by the rear wheel in the world
You obviously ignore advice.
Good Luck

Re: Project Freestyle
WOW. Thank you for your un-informed post. TK was the one that suggested the 3M paint stripping wheel. Which is what I used. TK said fail on the picture taking. The bracket I admit is a mistake but I have figured out another way to mount it so I am going to with that. I am not sure why you are so upset with what I do with my bike? I actually took TK's advice I am not sure why you are upset. The VR is fine the way it is. The VR got wet in it's stock location I put some di-electric grease to protect the electrical connectors and it's been fine.
Next time you are going to make a post at least have some idea what you are talking about. Take a hike buddy.
This is what I used. Obviously you should work on your reading comprehension. And I know very well there is a picture with a dremel beside the gas tank. I am not sure why but your post is so off base it pisses me right off.thatkid wrote:kleen strip will do it. Or use one of those scotch brite paint strippers that attaches to a drill.

Fixed a couple things today that were bothering me. I am very happy with this now.
New resevoir location
SS lines in the front

New tank mount
Outside shot!

Ya I am currently just using some aircraft cable at the moment.
Re: Project Freestyle
I've actually complimented you on your great work. I get very upset when I hear of parts falling off any motor vehicle, it's very dangerous especially for other road users! who may need to take evasive action, could have their tyres punctured, that part could bounce through their windscreen
Those sort of incidents can and have caused fatalities!!!! During my training SAFETY was drummed into me, I'm aware of the facts.
The new mounting point looks much improved & very secure
Regarding the water splashed onto the VR, those contaminates will get baked onto the cooling fins, reducing their efficiency (to cool the VR). Trust me on that.
EDIT, photos to prove the above fact where removed, not by me. They are however available to view on page 4 of this thread.
Im taking a verrrryyyyyy...................... looooooooooooong......... hike, obviously I know NOTHING

IMHO the best way to remove paint is how sweekster suggested, any abrasive/grinning wheel also removes the metal. You could use a DA (Dimple Action) sander with 240 grade discs. The dremel in the photo with a grinding wheel attached, not a "scotch brite paint stripper" implies that is what you used, and why the metal has been ground away (a painters nightmare)thatkid wrote:Freestyle72 wrote:Care to enlighten me as to what pictures you want? Or worst you just don't like how it looks?
They are too dark. I can't tell the quality of the paint job on the tank.

Re: Project Freestyle
My K5 GSXR1000's VR is in that same spot. No issues yet.
Great build. I wanna get me a 400 frame and title someday and gut my YZF for it's heart and stick it into the 400.
Cheap insurance, less weight, and a rarity.
A 100 hp 660 in a 350 lb bike would be so much fun. I even love your choce in headlights-I looked at the same ones, but need wind protection. A buell Ulysees Windscreen and headlight setup would suit m fancy. I realy like the gsxR swingarm conversion.

As far as the grinding goes you just have to see where the travel of the swinger is and grind where it's too thick to clear the frame.
Re: Project Freestyle
So did you ever get your R6 tank to work ? any photos of final product ?
