Peanut cover and bearings.....

any body know if you can take the bearings out of a peanut cover to transfer them to a new one w/o damaging them??

Whilst I've never attempted to remove the bearing from a peanut cover. I have many times removed the main shaft bearing from an aluminium car gearbox (transmission) extension housing, without damaging the bearing. The trick is to run very hot or boiling water over the aluminium (expanding it) the bearing usually falls out easily. Make sure you hold the peanut cover with a pair of pliers, so you don't scold/burn yourself.

Failing that why not just grind the damaged peanut cover, close to the bearing then split the casing with a cold chisel.

If you succeed, same thing run hot/boiling water over the peanut cover, tap the bearing on the outer race only when refitting it.

if the peanut cover is damaged but possibly repairable I'd like to have a go at it. Also, if you just put the peanut cover in an oven on about 400 it'll usually fall out on its own. but new bearings are 2 bucks. Why not just get a new one??

I wouldn't refit a bearing that's been heated to 400, It's scrap metal.

The cover itself will be junk at that point - you'll draw the temper. I don't know what heat treating these parts received, but I'm pretty sure a bearing carrier will have had something done to it. 220-230, just hot enough to drop the bearing...

The peanut covers are cast so as to their temper being affected by a 5-10 min ride in a 400° oven it's a non issue. The bearing is a full metal bearing. 5-10 minutes in an oven will not be long enough to hit it to the 400 the oven is set to. The bearing stays at a constant 200+ degrees in the motor during a spirited day of riding. Pushing it above those temps for 5 minutes is not going to toast the bearing.

Still, all this is moot since a new bearing is only 2 bucks and should be installed anyway.

Having powdercoated many engine covers I can tell you that 400° in the oven for 20 minutes does nothing to affect the temper of a cover. Annealing is done at much higher temps for much longer time periods.

Thanks everybody....for the low price, Im just gonna get a new bearing set, the cover is brand new anyway....might as well make it 100% new.

well done , you should never ever re-use old bearings in a new setting. It is a bit like the false economy of using old chains on new sprockets and visa versa

As for cases & tempers unless you have some billet stuff custom made for the bike as TK says it is a non-issue as Yamaha's are all castings
