On an 89 the biggest you should go is 140.

He has an 89 version with the narrow rear rim so 140 is the safest, from 90 onward yes what you suggest 150, 160 would be for the 17" wider still FZR 400 rim if memory serves ????????????

if you are looking to upgrade to a newer rim, i have an FZR400 rear rim with a good 150 Bridgestone BT56(i think, i'll have to check) on it, the 400 rim is a bit lighter then the 600 and its a direct bolt on.
I did that.

I ran a stock 89 with a 150 rear tire and it wore at the center of the tire. i would recommend the 140 and before that 140 wears out source all the parts for the yzf swinger... I plan to finish mine this week totally worth every bit!!!

You might wanna check the rim for size because people like to swap for a newer rim to fit the 140.
If it is a 3.5 rim (89' stock) then the biggest you can go is a 140
If it is a 4.0 rim (90'+) then the biggest you want to go is 150. 160 is really pushing it. My 150 only has 1/8" on each side between the chain and brake arm.

If you want a long lasting tire that will not flatten in the center then I would greatly recommend the Avon Storm 2 Sport Touring which lasts about 8K+ miles and grips the road rain or shine.
