3 problems. need help!

Post by Kaje »

1)Well,i was riding my beloved Raiden.. yes...thats what i named the bike.. ;] when i ran out of gas.. i must have estimated my gas milage wrong. anyways, i went to switch on the reserve tank, and behold! there was nothing. What would cause this??

2) i went to a party with raiden, and when i left, i went to start the bike, but it wouldnt turn over, i had to roll start the bike. now, i check the battery, and apparently its ok. what things could this be caused by..

3) i notice shifting from 1st to 2nd, a lot of times i shift into neutral, even though i am giving a full positive upward motion. coming back down from 2nd to 1st, the pedal seems to rattle a bit.. are these related? is it something that needs to be adjusted?

Thanks for all the wisdom to a noob mechanic. =]

Ahhh ha. I did the exact same thing as number 1 and 2. I've seen on another thread that you need to actually switch to reserve before you run out of gas. I alway thought you did it AFTER you ran out of gas and the bike would pull from the bottom of the tank instead of the little hose inside. Someone else might chime in. After I ran out of gas coming home from church, I went to start her the next day and I wouldn't roll over. I had fouled the plugs. I would start there. As far as the shifting. It's a pretty common problem. mine will do it a little more often if my oil is in need of a change. Also you can adjust where the shifter sits in relation to the peg. I had to do this because I have a size 12 shoe and the PO had a 9.5.

1. same thing happen to me, i removed the petcock/fuel tap. Both tubes where missing. There should be 2 at different heights, the highest tube controls when you switch to reserve. I.E. when the fuel level drops below that tube, you switch to reserve. If that tube is missing = no reserve tank and no warning.

2. Could be anything, far to many things to mention, more detail required.

3.Could be you just need to get used to the bike. However 2nd Gear is a common fault on the FZR. Others can advise you on that IDK

As for #1, mawler covered that well. You can see the tubes if you remove your gas cap and look inside with a flashlight.

2. Hard to say, if it does not happen again just chalk it up to randomness.

3. Normal. First to second, and especially second down to first can be a real "grind".

Guys,
Whilst (3) is a known iffyness with the FZR gear shift mech I thought there was an after market cure with a new detente plate and spring or some such to make shifting a more positive experience ??????race tech ??????

Sweekster feel free to chime in and help this old grey hair with his senior moment :-}

Just recalled when i got my 600 the gear change was stiff neutral was a pain to locate. Shifting up really marked my boots, if i had trainers on my foot got really sore. There's an external pivot on the gear shift lever close to the foot peg. I lubricated that problem solved.

I do know riding with trainers is dumb, and not advisable.
