escort coil pack question

Post by match417 »

I think I've posted this before. But my issue is different now. The coil pack isn't igniting the gas in the engine. If I pull the plug out and put gas on the tip, the gas burns from the spark igniting it, but the engine won't run. I have my plug gap set to that of the ford escort, and I have stock plug wires for the escort, I also screwed on some of the spark plug caps off of some old spark plugs. The bike doesn't run with my YZF600 carburetors , or with the stock carburetors that I have that came off of it originally.

Anyway, that's the problem, I will probably close the gap a little bit more to help with the spark. But I don't see how that's an issue if my coil pack arc's a very hot spark at over a 1/2 inch (13mm). The gap is 54 thousandths of an inch, double that of the stock FZR coil pack, so the gap is right. This is so irritating. I've cleaned my YZF carbs 3 times thinking that would fix it, and I've put my old stock carbs back on after cleaning them and putting in newer floats. I have a spark, so that rules out the pickup. I even pulled out my engine a log time ago to check the valve lash and timing chain. All that checks out ok, but even if my valve lash needed adjustment, it would still run, just rough like it had a compression leak.

Match,

Ok so the engine tumbles and sparks fly when out of the engine.

If it is not igniting you should have wet smelly plugs .
Is that the case?

It also occurs to me that the engine is not starting because you have the plug wires in the wrong order that they are not firing as the piston is on its firing stroke but in the wasted spark position .
Just a thought.

I didn't think to pull them out to check if they are wet. I'll have to do that.

And I am 100% positive that the plug wires are in the right order. I've checked that over and over again. I even swapped 1/4 wires with 2/3 and it backfired through the carbs. So I switched it back.

Anyway, what do other guys with this coil pack set their gap to on the plugs?

I would try setting the gap back to what the FZR specs are. The spark could just be getting blown out instead of igniting. Just a thought

When I did the conversion, I just kept the dual post spark plugs that I already had in the motor. No need for gapping!! Just plug and play!
