someone do a quick voltage check for me?

Post by yttaf »

Hi, was wondering if someone could do a quick voltage check for me? I'm wanting to know when the key is on what voltage you get to the orange wire at the digital ignitor & what the voltage is of the grey wire at the digital ignitor.

This is of course the 2 lead wires that go to the coils. I have full power to one but not the other so I'm wanting to see if I should have full power to both which I'm pretty sure I'm suppposed to...

Thanx, Cory

I'm waiting delivery of a new battery, will check that out for you when it arrives. no point testing with a duff/dead battery.

Thank you I'd really appreciate it! I just can't figure out why I'm not getting power to the orange wire.

NP your welcome.

I recall your previous thread on this issue. "91 FZR600 with no spark?"

You do know the orange and grey wires are the coil negatives? The power isn't supplied by the TCI, the TCI merely decides when the circuit should be complete (makes breaks the earth/ground connection)

Circuit complete the coil secondary windings charge up, circuit incomplete (the TCI decides) secondary windings dump, thus firing the plugs.

no I didn't know the orange & grey were the negatives. I'm just trying to figure out if it's supposed to be this way cause the orange wire is the only one without power going to it. Just seemed odd to me so I figured if others were like this then it must be ok.

Any power supplied to the orange wire comes via the primary coil winding on that specific coil, no where else.

EDIT
Check the primary winding resistance on that coil.

I guess in the end I don't have a clue what I'm doing. I just know I have spark to 1 coil but not the other

Check the primary winding resistance on that coil.

mawler wrote:I've never checked the coils on a FZR (so if im wrong here someone please chime in) disconnect both connectors yellow and white that feed the coils.

The primary windings test point should be checked imho at the solder connections (top of the coils) connect the ohm meter to the red/white wire and the orange wire (coil for plugs #1 & #4) take the reading, then the red/white wire and the grey wire (coil #2 & #3) reading should be 1.8 to 2.2 ohms. also check those connectors for any sign of corrosion.

The secondary windings are tested between the ignition wires/plug caps, connect the ohm meter between #1 & #4, then #2 & #3 reading should be 9,600 to 14,400 ohms

Both readings should be checked when the coils are cold I.E. 68 degrees F
I posted that on another thread

ok i just checked your correct 12v @ grey and orange, i tested @ both coil and TCI end of the wires.

hmmm wonder why I have 12v at 1 but not the other??? My replacement digital ignitor bad?

have you checked the coil primary windings, especially coil for #1 & #4 cylinders?

also have you checked the voltage (orange wire) with the TCI unplugged/disconnected?

ok with the tci unplugged I have 12v to all the wires on top of the coils

well id say that rules out a fault on the coils. with the TCI still unpluged check the votage orange wire @ the TCI plug.

with the TCI connected check the voltage on orange then grey wires while the engine is cranking, do the voltages pulse up and down? (12v then lower)

I checked the plug end of the tci unplugged & has 12v to both orange & grey wire. I plug the tci back in & turn it over while checking the orange & no movement & still .34v & went up to .44 while turning over. Then I tested the grey wire had 10.32v & went dows to 8.3v while cranking
